GOLDEN, Colo. - Prior to Friday night's RMAC Tournament semifinal, Colorado School of Mines'
John Haist was presented with his conference player of the year plaque.
Then he showed why he earned it.
Haist scored twice to power #9 Mines into Sunday's RMAC Tournament final with a 3-1 win over MSU Denver, sending the Orediggers (16-3) to their second final in three years. Mines will face #19 Colorado Mesa, a 1-0 overtime winner against Fort Lewis, Sunday at 1 p.m.
Talon Stanley added a late marker as Mines outshot the Roadrunners (8-11-1) by a 23-14 margin, avenging their only regular-season RMAC loss.
Mines applied heavy pressure to start the game but didn't break through until the 34th minute.
Jason Zobott headed off the crossbar, and Haist was there to put in the rebound for his 20th of the year; Haist then doubled the lead in the 76th minute, sprung on the breakaway by
Ryan Blarr and finishing from a near-impossible angle to go up 2-0. Stanley then sidefooted a chip from
Trevor Amann in the 81st minute to make it 3-0, with the Roadrunners getting a consolation goal in the final minute when Hector Banegas headed in Kevin Beck's cross.
Haist's brace takes him to 21 goals for the season, joining Tesho Akindele (22, 2012) as the only other 20-goal scorer in a Mines season.
Collin Hall was outstanding in goal with seven saves. James Tanner had six stops for the Roadrunners.
