SALT LAKE CITY - In a matchup of two of the RMAC's top teams, #12 Colorado School of Mines held off Westminster in a thriller, 65-64, to end 2017 at 12-1.
The Orediggers (12-1, 6-1 RMAC) held the Griffins (9-2, 5-2 RMAC) without a field goal for the final 4:27 of the game to overcome a five-point deficit and win.
Michael Glen had a go-ahead tip-in with 2:53 remaining, and neither team scored after that in a drama-packed close to the game.
Mines got big performances across its lineup as
Ben Sonnefeld scored 15 points with six assists, Glen had a 12-point, 10-rebound double-double, and
Zach Rusk came off the bench for 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting.
National scoring leader Dayon Goodman poured in 33 for the Griffins, including 20 in the second half, but Mines held the rest of the Westminster lineup in check with no other player in double figures.
Mines recovered from a big early deficit to lead 36-35 at the half, and a 10-1 run early in the second put the visitors ahead by their largest lead, 48-38, six minutes into the second.
Westminster answered with an 11-0 run of their own to take the lead, but Mines quickly went back ahead and stayed there until Quincy Bair's jumper with 4:27 left put the Griffins on top 62-61. Scoring was at a premium from there as a pair of Glen free throws gave Mines the lead back before Goodman matched him, and Glen tipped in the go-ahead bucket again with 2:53 remaining.
That would be the final points of the game for either side as Westminster missed four shots in the closing 2:37 - including two looks to win it with under 10 seconds to go. Mason Smith's last shot was rebounded by Glen, and Rusk went to the line with 0.4 seconds left, but sent his second wide after missing the first to avoid giving WC an inbounds play.
The two teams will turn around and meet again on Jan. 6 as Westminster visits Golden for a 3 p.m. start.
