GOLDEN, Colo. - Colorado School of Mines' best shooting night of the season helped them deal Black Hills State its first loss in an 83-74 decision at Lockridge Arena.
The Orediggers remained perfect in RMAC play at 3-0 (6-3 overall) while the Yellow Jackets fell to 8-1 and 2-1 in league play. Mines shot 47.5 percent for the game behind
Emily Bailey's 23 points and
Anna Kollmorgen's 14 points and eight assists.
Nicole Archambeau continued to produce for Mines with nine points, eight rebounds, and five assists, while
Cassidy Budge went 3-for-3 from beyond the arc to score 11. Katie Messler led BHSU with 17 points.
It was a sloppy game for both sides as they combined for 39 turnovers (21 by BHSU), and Mines made the most of their opportunities scoring 26 points off turnovers to the Yellow Jackets' 15. The first half was one of runs as Black Hills got up 12-4 to start the game before a 16-2 run by the Orediggers gave them control and a 20-14 lead at the end of the first quarter. BHSU answered with a 9-0 run to start the second before a bucket by
Mikaela Moore,
Katie Kuhn's three, and Achambeau's and-one made it 33-25 Mines at the midpoint of the period on the way to a 45-37 halftime lead.
Black Hills State would not go quietly, however, using a 10-0 run in the third to tie it at 62-62, and forcing three ties overall in the second half. Mines never gave up the lead, however, bouncing back each time, but it was a one-basket game as late as the 1:32 mark after Cortez Standing Bear sank a pair of free throws. BHSU was forced to burn its final timeout seconds later to keep possession in a scramble at Mines' end, and that proved costly as the Orediggers quickly stole the momentum back on Archambeau's three-pointer with 1:19 left. Kollmorgen then hit two free throws with 48 seconds left, and Bailey sealed it with a three-point play as Mines ended the game on an 8-0 run, holding BHSU without a field goal for the final 4:12.
Mines shot 15-of-19 at the foul line and 10-of-20 for three.
The Orediggers stay home to host South Dakota Mines Saturday at 5 p.m.
