GOLDEN, Colo. - #14/11 Colorado School of Mines used a huge second half to overcome Adams State and advance to the RMAC Tournament semifinals with a 99-79 quarterfinal win.
The Orediggers (25-4) sank eight three-pointers and received a combined 35 points from
Gokul Natesan and
Luke Schroepfer in the second half to shake off a tough Grizzly team and win going away.
Mines, the tournament's top seed, will host rival MSU Denver in the semifinals on Friday at 7:30 p.m. The fifth-seeded Roadrunners were an upset 80-73 winner over Regis. In Friday's other semifinal, second-seeded Fort Lewis will take on sixth-seeded Colorado Christian at 5 p.m. Lockridge Arena will host that game as well as Saturday's 7:30 p.m. final; all games will air live on CET.
Natesan ended up with a huge stat line of 27 points, seven assists, and three steals, while Schroepfer came alive in the second half to score 24 with a 6-for-10 three-point shooting night.
Caleb Waitsman pitched in 16 points with seven boards. Brandon Sly paced ASU with 24 points.
Mines held a slim lead for most of the first half, but couldn't shake the Grizzlies. After leading by 11 early in the second half, Mines gave up a 16-6 run as ASU cut the lead to a point, 58-57, at the 13:22 mark. The Orediggers responded with a huge 17-5 run which included a combined 12 points by Natesan and Schroepfer. That put the Orediggers up 75-62, and after two straight buckets by Sly, Mines put the hammer down with a Schroepfer trifecta and Waitsman's three-point play before a shot-clock-beating bankshot three-pointer by Natesan put the final nail in the coffin with 5:03 remaining.
