DENVER, Colo. – A buzzer-beating three-pointer at the end of regulation by
Laura Tyree and another career night from
Emily Bailey gives the Colorado School of Mines a 82-79 victory at #22 Regis University on Friday, February 3.
Mines (14-11, 10-6) sweeps the season series from the crosstown rival Rangers (16-4, 11-4) with tonight's victory at the Regis Fieldhouse. Just like in the first meeting, it was redshirt sophomore
Emily Bailey who did the heavy lifting as she scored a career-high 29 points.
Down 71-68 and the clock ticking down in regulation, senior point guard
Laura Tyree took a contested pass at the top of the key and launched a three-pointer over a RU defender. The shot hit off the backboard, hit front end of the rim and fell in to push the game into overtime.
Then, with around a minute left in overtime, Tyree drove down the left side of the lane. Her decisive drive forced RU to send a double team her way which then left
Anna Kollmorgen wide open for an easy layup to put Mines up 80-79. Regis had one last chance to steal the game, but the Orediggers were able to force a turnover and
Emily Bailey iced the game out at the free throw line.
After an initial slow start, both teams picked up the pace near the end of the first quarter which stretched into the second quarter. While Mines grabbed a brief lead, 15-14, Regis led most of the opening half.
The Rangers maintained that almost to halftime, but
Emily Bailey capped her 11-point first half with a layup with 1:13 left to put Mines up 34-33 at intermission.
As the game moved into the second half, Mines continued to lead as they eventually pushed its advantage out as much as seven points (52-45) late in the third quarter. Regis eventually whittled the Mines advantage down, and both teams traded the lead back-and-forth throughout the final period of regular time.
