Box Score 2 COLORADO SPRINGS - Down to their final out, Colorado School of Mines rallied back for a game one win before UCCS walked off in extras in game two as they split their doubleheader on Saturday.
Paige Noehring hit a two-out RBI double in the seventh inning to send the opener to extras, where
Katie Leiker's two-run home run would win it for Mines, but the Mountain Lions' Alex Cook doubled in the winning run in the bottom of the eighth of game two.
GAME ONE - Mines 5, UCCS 3 (8 inn.)
Leiker's eighth-inning home run proved decisive as Mines won the series opener 5-3.
The Orediggers rallied back from 3-0 down as UCCS put a run on the board in each of the three innings.
Clara Larson bombed a two-run shot to right center in the fourth to make it 3-2, but that UCCS lead persisted to the seventh. Mines was on the verge with two outs and no one on, but
Kelsey Buechler singled before Noehring scored her with a double to left field, sending the game to extras after a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh by
Maddie Rogers.
In the eighth, Larson singled before Leiker homered to center, putting Mines ahead 5-3. In the bottom half,
Hallie Smith issued a walk and a single to put two on, but Leiker and Larson worked a double play off a liner to end the game.
Claire Stringfellow started and went 2.0 innings, with Rogers picking up the win with six innings of scoreless relief. Smith earned her fourth save of the season pitching the bottom of the eighth.
GAME TWO - UCCS 3, Mines 2 (8 inn.)
Alex Cook's eighth-inning double walked off with a win for UCCS as the hosts rallied to win 3-2.
After UCCS scored a run in the first, Mines didn't take the lead until the fifth when
Loren Dempsey singled in
Stefanie Brunello, and
Kara Walling scored on an error later in the inning. UCCS wasted no time in tying it with Waidler's RBI single in the bottom half, and Mines left the go-ahead run on third in both the sixth and seventh innings. In the eighth, Mines again put the go-ahead run on third as they had the bases loaded with one out, but a pair of UCCS strikeouts got them out of the jam, and back-to-back doubles in the bottom half won it.
Hallie Smith went the distance and allowed three earned in the loss.
