Box Score GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. -
Jason Zobott's header of
David Boldt's free kick with 52 seconds remaining in regulation won it for Colorado School of Mines as they stunned #6 Colorado Mesa, 2-1, in their RMAC opener Friday.
The Orediggers (3-2-0, 1-0-0 RMAC) went ahead on
John Haist's sixth goal of the season in the 52nd minute before CMU (4-1-0, 0-1-0 RMAC) answered back a minute later on Benji Delgadillo's strike.
Goalkeeper
Collin Hall was outstanding, making five saves as CMU held a slim 12-11 shots advantage. Corners were 5-5.
After a scoreless first half, it was Haist who got things going with his RMAC-best sixth goal of the season, beating two defenders to score at 51:47 and give Mines the lead. That lasted all of a minute as Delgadillo headed in Kevin Del Mazo's cross at 52:47, knotting things at 1-1.
Mines had a sustained period of pressure in the final 15 minutes, holding CMU without a shot in the final half hour as they went for a winner. They found it in the final minute with a Colorado Mesa foul giving Boldt a free-kick opportunity that he put into the box for Zobott to head home at 89:08.
The loss was Colorado Mesa's first in RMAC play since Oct. 11, 2015, when they lost 1-0 to Mines in Golden. The Mavericks ran the table in winning the league in 2016, going 12-0-2.
The Orediggers continue their road trip Sunday, visiting Westminster in Salt Lake City.
