Box Score GOLDEN, Colo. - Colorado School of Mines stunned #9 UC San Diego with a four-goal barrage, shutting out the Tritons 4-0 in their home opener.
The Orediggers (2-1) had a brace from
Jennifer Kendall and strikes by
Hannah Stoner and
Brooke Stoermer as they beat UCSD (3-1) for the second consecutive season. The Tritons were appearing at Stermole Stadium for the second straight year after ending their season in the NCAA West Regional final to eventual national champion Western Washington last fall.
Kendall got Mines off to a dream start as she buried
Emily Garnier's free kick in the 15th minute, and Stoner notched her first career goal by pouncing on a backpass and beating the goalkeeper one-on-one at 35:49.
Kendall added another goal in the 53rd minute as
Julia Hawn's hard shot from the left was saved and rebounded to Kendall's feet for an easy finish. Stoermer punctuated the win in the 80th minute, finishing
Emily Townsend's flick of
Haley Cole's corner.
Shannon Mooney was superb in goal with five saves to earn her second consecutive shutout. Angelica Ramos made four stops for UCSD. Mines outshot the Tritons 12-8, but the Oredigger back line held UCSD without a serious scoring chance in the game.
Mines continues its home stand Sunday, playing Cal State San Bernardino at 2:30 p.m.
