Mines began the Steel & Silver Classic at UCCS with a 3-0 win over Newman, cruising past the Jets behind
Ellie Monarch's 16 kills.
Monarch hit 10 of her 16 kills in the first set to get the Orediggers off and running, hitting .438 for the match and adding four blocks.
Marina Hansen powered the attack with 41 assists, while
Janice Jin had 10 kills and eight digs and
Abby Tiesman added eight kills.
Hailey Babcock led Mines with 14 digs.
The middle rotation of Monarch and Tiesman dominated as they combined for 26 of Mines' 46 kills on 46 total swings.Â
Newman was led by Emily Harvey's 11 kills and 18 digs from Anna Burton.
Central Oklahoma 3, #22 Mines 0 (25-21, 25-22, 25-18)
In the afternoon match, Central Oklahoma got up early in every set to earn a 3-0 win.
The Orediggers were held to .200 hitting for the match as UCO was paced by Taylor Bevis' 16 kills and eight digs. The Brochos had 12 blocks in all and eight aces.
LaRose Currie (10 kills, 9 digs) and
Janice Jin (9 kills, 9 digs) came close to double-doubles for Mines.
Abby Tiesman added eight kills while Maddie Behr hit a team-high .417 for six kills on 12 swings.
