GOLDEN, Colo. – The #5-ranked Colorado School of Mines Men's Soccer team battled the #24-ranked Colorado Mesa Mavericks to a 1-1 draw Friday evening at Stermole Stadium.
Lucas King scored the only goal for Mines while
John Haist chipped in the assist. Haist led all players with seven shots, placing one on goal.
Matthew Summerfield was second on the team with four shots in just 23 minutes of action. Goalkeeper
Drew Johnson earned the first draw of his career as he improved to 13-1-1.
As a team, Mines (13-1-1, 10-0-1 RMAC) out-shot Colorado Mesa (9-1-4, 7-1-3 RMAC) by a margin of 21-13. The Orediggers put six shots on goal compared to the Mavericks' one. The draw keeps Mines seven points ahead of Mesa in the RMAC standings and alone in first place.
HOW IT HAPPENED
All of the scoring in Friday's hard-fought match took place over a span of 58 seconds. Despite averaging over 20 shots per game, Mines managed just two through the first 17:01 of action. Both attempts came from King with his first hitting the crossbar at the 10:27 mark. It was King's second shot that got the Orediggers on the board.
Just under 17 minutes into the match, Haist carried the ball within six yards of the goal before sending a pass across the goal mouth to a waiting King. The Washington native one-timed the ball past the scrambling Mavericks' goalkeeper into the back of the net, putting Mines ahead 1-0.
Colorado Mesa took no time responding. With possession around the top of the 18-yard box, Matthew Miller flicked a back-heel pass towards the center of the field. Niall Shaffery was there to send a scalding shot past Johnson, tying the match 1-1.
That would be all the scoring for the next 92 minutes.
Ben Overholt sent a rocket on frame in the 82nd minute but Mesa's goalkeeper came up with the save.
Ryan Wilson attempted to convert the ensuing corner kick with an attempt of his own. King created Mines' final threat in the 100th minute with the ball floating at his toe, but Mesa came up with the save again to clinch the draw.
