GOLDEN, Colo. – The #5-ranked Colorado School of Mines Men's Soccer team celebrated their seniors Thursday night with a 5-1 win over South Dakota Mines in the Orediggers' last regular-season home match of the season.
Ethan Coit,
John Haist and
Matthew Summerfield were all honored in a pregame ceremony and featured in Mines' starting 11. Haist finished the match with five points on two goals and assist while Summerfield tipped his cap with the second assist of his career.
Baptiste Debuire notched two goals as well with
Ryan Wilson accounting for the fifth tally. Joining Haist and Summerfield in the assist column were
Ben Overholt,
Lucas King,
Julian Kehe and
Talon Stanley.
The win keeps Mines (15-1-1, 12-0-1 RMAC) undefeated over its last 15 matches. The Orediggers out-shot the Hardrockers (2-12-3, 1-9-3 RMAC) by a margin of 22-6. Mines put 13 of those shots on goal while South Dakota Mines managed just one attempt on frame.
The 2018 RMAC Tournament field is now set, but teams are still playing for seeding in the six-team field. Regis, Westminster, Colorado Mesa, MSU Denver and UCCS are guaranteed postseason action, but have yet to find out who or where they will play. As the #1 seed, Mines is guaranteed a berth in the semifinal match Nov. 2 at Stermole Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
For the first nine minutes of play, it seemed as if the game might end in a 0-0 draw. However, Wilson changed that in the 10th minute as he volleyed in a rebound off a header from Haist. The sequence was set up by a cross from
Patrick Allan.
Mines struck again in the 32nd minute thanks to the foot of Haist. Kehe sent a pass in behind the Hardrockers' defense and Haist finished his breakaway opportunity to the left of the goalkeeper. It would prove to be the game-winning goal in the high-scoring affair.
Debuire gave the Orediggers a 3-0 cushion just seconds before halftime. Stanley followed a long pass up the field from Overholt and used just one touch near the end-line to send a pass across the goalmouth to the waiting head of Debuire on the far left side of the frame.
The home team did not rest on its 3-0 lead. Haist scored his second of the match in the 61st minute off a throw-in from King, making it 4-0. Then, Debuire capped the scoring in the 71st minute as took a pass from Summerfield behind the defense and finished to the right of the goalkeeper.
South Dakota Mines notched its lone goal in the 63rd minute. The Hardrockers' leading scorer Just Barkow carried the ball across the Orediggers' 18-yard line and teed up a rocket that froze goalkeeper
Drew Johnson.
