Edwards, Defense Carry #5 Mines Past Dixie State

GOLDEN, Colo. - Eliot Edwards' first collegiate goal made the difference as #5 Colorado School of Mines fought off a tough Dixie State team in a 1-0 win.

The Orediggers (11-1-1, 8-0-0 RMAC) remained perfect in conference play thanks to an iron-clad defense that helped them survive a frantic final 15 minutes while the Trailblazers (6-5-0, 2-5-0 RMAC) hunted for an equalizer.

Shannon Mooney had two saves to pick up her RMAC-leading seventh shutout as the defense in front of her gave up only five shots, including one in the first half.

Mines dominated the possession in the first half with an 8-1 shots advantage, and the breakthrough came late in the half when Kaylee Kennedy drew a foul near the left touchline. That set up a free kick opportunity for Dominique Rivera, who sent a ball to the far post for Edwards to head down and in at 41:25.

Edwards nearly made it two early in the second half when she dispossessed a defender and forced goalkeeper Felicity Tarr to make a leaping save on the breakaway, and Mines had numerous other second-half chances with 10 shots after the break. Dixie State finally started to build possession in the final 15 minutes and that resulted in a flurry of shots, the most dangerous coming in the 84th minute when Whitley Johns crashed into the box for a touch to force a close-range reaction save by Mooney.
