GOLDEN, Colo. - #4 Colorado School of Mines' season ended in heartbreaking fashion as they were eliminated from the NCAA Championship in penalty kick despite out-playing Dallas Baptist in a 1-1 draw.
The Orediggers end the season at 19-1-2 having not been beaten in their final 15 games. Dallas Baptist (13-5-4) moves on to face West Texas A&M in the third round next weekend after winning the penalty kick shootout 3-1. Mines outshot the Patriots 24-5 for the match.
Mines had to play from behind much of the game after Abigail Olmos scored in the sixth minute on DBU's first scoring chance of the first half, but
Nicole LaTourette leveled in the 65th minute to force overtime.
The Orediggers came out with early pressure but DBU scored against the run of play on their first venture into the offensive third. Delaney Schmidt fed a through-ball to Olmos in the sixth minute that left Olmos in a one-on-one situation, and she finished for the early lead. Mines kept up the pressure with 10 first-half shots - seven of them on goal - but went into halftime empty-handed down 1-0.
Mines' breathrough came in the 65th minute when
Jennifer Kendall worked her way into the box and crossed to her left for LaTourette, who fired her finish from 15 yards out to make it a 1-1 match. The home side continued to press with an 8-1 shots advantage, and a wild scramble in the box off a corner in the closing seconds nearly resulted in a winner, but the match ended up in extra time.
The first overtime was relatively uneventful, but Mines was denied a potential penalty as
Kaylee Kennedy went to ground in the box in the second extra period. The Orediggers outshot DBU 6-0 across both overtimes, but only one of those shots - a
Dominique Rivera free kick in the 110th minute - was on goal.
In the penalty kick shootout, DBU goalkeeper Hope Koym made three saves as only LaTourette managed to make a PK. After missing their first attempt, the Patriots made three straight as Melanie Castelan sealed it with a make in the fourth round.
