DENVER –
Senior runner Grant Colligan dominated the field yet again Saturday as he took gold at the 2018 NCAA South Central Regional Championships. Mines' men took first with the Oredigger women third at Washington Park as both squads claimed berths in the NCAA National Championships.

Colligan outran silver-medalist Marcelo Laguera of CSU-Pueblo by nearly 16 seconds in the men's 10,000-meter race as he raced to a first-place finish and the first individual regional title of his career. Six of Mines' seven runners claimed all-region honors as Josh Hoskinson finished sixth, Derek Steele 12th, Logan Ramlet 13th, Luke Julian 17th, Jake Mitchem 18th and Ricardo Ocampo 35th. The Orediggers' tight grouping gave the men their second team title in the last three years, beating out regional favorite Adams State by eight points, 49-57. Colligan has now run two races in 2018 and won them both.

True freshman Zoe Baker paced Mines' women in the 6,000-meter race as she dashed to all-region distinction in her NCAA Regional Championship debut, finishing 13th. The finish adds to Baker's impressive freshman campaign after she earned First-Team All-RMAC honors two weeks ago. A trio of Orediggers joined Baker on the all-region squad as Megan Wenham crossed 20th, Brook Eberle 21st and Michaela Reynolds 25th. Mines was all alone in third place as a team as it beat out fourth-place UCCS by almost 50 points.

Overall, RMAC programs claimed the top six spots on both the men's and women's side. Adams State's men took second with Western Colorado's men taking third and the final automatic berth in the NCAA National Championships. The women's side featured the same three teams in a different order with Adams State's women claiming gold, Western Colorado taking silver with Mines clinching bronze for the first time since 2015.
