Mines 8, Dominican (Calif.) 0 (5 inn.)
Colorado School of Mines supported
Claire Stringfellow's shutout with eight runs off nine hits to start the day with an 8-0 run-rule win over Dominican.
Katie Leiker recorded her 100th career hit with her fifth-inning RBI walk-off single, capping a 2-for-4 game, while
Sonoma Toot and
Pua Fujinaga also had two-hit games as Fujinaga and
Kara Jones drove in two runs each.
Mines struck for four in the third inning when
Boston Ludlow drew a bases-loaded walk to score
Clara Larson, Jones drove Leiker across when she reached on an error, and Fujinaga singled in
Megan Dickson. Toot ended the rally with another bases-loaded walk to plate Jones.
In the fourth, Jones brought in Larson before Fujinaga's fielder's choice allowed Dickson to score making it 7-0, and Leiker ended it in the fifth when she singled up the middle to plate toot and set the score at 8-0.
Stringfellow (2-2) was outstanding, scattering four hits and striking out five as she faced 19 batters over five innings to get the win.
#9 Dixie State 10, Mines 9 (9 inn.)
#9 Dixie State walked off with an extra-innings win as Mines pushed the undefeated Trailblazers to the limit in a wild back-and-forth game to end the Easton Classic.
The Orediggers gave up a lead in the sixth inning but rallied back to force extras, then DSU had to rally twice to win it as four fielding errors cost Mines late in the game.
Clara Larson went 3-for-5 with three RBI as she and
Megan Dickson each hit home runs. Dickson and
Sonoma Toot each drove in two runs.
Mines held the lead for much of the game as Larson's first-inning two-run bomb put them ahead as the sophomore hit her sixth of the young season.
Kylie Redding's first collegiate hit produced a run in the fifth to extend the lead to 3-0, but DSU chipped away with two runs in the bottom of the fifth before Kenzie Sawyer's two-run home run in the sixth put them ahead 4-3. Mines responded with
Sonoma Toot's two-out, two-run single in the seventh to go back ahead 5-4, but Jessica Gonzalez's sacrifice fly in the bottom half forced extras.
In the eighth with the international tie breaker in effect,
Katie Leiker grounded out but scored
Dani Valerio from third before Dickson went deep to score herself and Larson and put Mines ahead 8-5. Dixie State was down to its last out in the eighth but Kaitlyn Delange reached on an error to score a run before Janessa Basset homered to tie the game and send it to the ninth. Mines again went ahead when
Clara Larson singled in
Stefanie Brunello, but another error allowed the tying run to score for Dixie State in the bottom half, and Sawyer singled in the winning run later in the Trailblazers' at-bat.
Hallie Smith took no decision, pitching eight full and allowing five earned with three strikeouts.
Claire Stringfellow (2-3) took the loss pitching the ninth. DSU combined three pitchers with Cambrie Hazel (4-0) earning the win in throwing the ninth.
