GOLDEN, Colo. – The Colorado School of Mines Men's Track and Field team won the 2018 RMAC Indoor Championships Saturday, running away from the field with 151.50 points. It marks the men's second team title in the last three years.
Â
The Oredigger women finished tied for fifth place with Chadron State, scoring 51 points. Mines' men beat the second place team by 61 points.
Â
"We're really proud to be able to host this championship," said Mines' head track and field coach
Matt Sparks. "Every team is different. Our men won a couple of years ago and it was a totally different experience this time. I was just really proud of the effort we put forth and I feel very prepared for what's to come in two-week's time and what we can do at the national meet."
Â
After scoring 28 team points in the men's 5,000-meter run Friday, the Orediggers carried the momentum into Saturday by sweeping the top three spots in the heptathlon.
Austin Smith finished first with 5,083 points while
Chase McLean finished second with 5,050 points and
Hayden Sather finished third with 4,807 points. All three Orediggers earned First-Team All-RMAC honors and put themselves in a good position to qualify for the NCAA Division II Indoor Championships with their provisional marks.
Â
Another huge spark for Mines' men was
Triston Sisneros who took second in the long jump Friday as he leapt a career-high 7.33 meters (24-0.75). Sisneros was even bigger Saturday as he shattered the 19-year old program record and won the 60-meter hurdles in a time of 8.01. The previous record was held by Eric Stellmon, set in 1999.
Â
In the men's pole vault, the Orediggers took four of the top eight spots as
Jake Pinkston led the way with a second-place finish, clearing 5.02 meters (16-5.5).
Connor McLean took fourth while
Zach Clark and
Brandon Hinkle finished sixth and seventh, respectively.
Â
On the women's side,
Amanda Giles lit the spark on Friday with her third-place finish in the pentathlon, scoring 3,287 points.
Courtney Clark and
Gina Coleman took that spark and lit a flame Saturday as they finished first and third in the shot put. Clark destroyed her own program record with a toss of 14.43 meters (47-4.25) and Coleman put up a mark of 13.18 meters (43-3.0). Both Orediggers earned First-Team All-RMAC distinction for their performances and Clark put herself in the discussion for an appearance at the national meet.
Â
Molly Reicher,
Brook Eberle and
Chloe Cook came up huge in the mile run, taking three of the top six spots and scoring 16 team points. The trio's performance added to Friday's excellence in the distance events where
Megan Wenham and
Michaela Reynolds finished fifth and sixth in the 5,000-meter run.
Â
As a team, Mines' men and women combined for 29 All-RMAC honors. The men finished with 10 first-teamers and 11 second-teamers. Mines' women placed four on the first team and four on the second team.
Â
The Orediggers take a week off before heading to the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships March 10-11, hosted by Pittsburg State in Pittsburg, Kan.
