Mines Battles #1 Colorado Mesa

GAME 1 - #1 Colorado Mesa 6, Mines 5
Colorado School of Mines gave #1 Colorado Mesa all it could handle in the series opener, but a two-run sixth by the Mavericks gave them a 6-5 win.

The Mavs improved to 27-0 after Mines gave them one of their toughest tests of the season, rallying to take the lead in the sixth and tagging McKenzie Surface for 10 hits in the game.

Megan Dickson went 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored, including her fourth home run of the season. Kara Jones and Dani Valerio joined Dickson with two-hit games.

CMU built a 3-0 lead in the first and second innings but Mines got back into it when Dickson jacked a two-run shot in the fourth to mamke it 3-2. Bailey Kleespies responded with a solo homer of her own to put CMU back ahead 4-2, but a big two-out rally in the sixth gave Mines their first lead of the game. Katie Leiker doubled to plate Clara Larson, and Loren Dempsey then smacked a bases-loaded double to give Mines the lead, 5-4.

CMU came back in the bottom half with two more runs as Brooke Hodgson singled in Maggie Manwarren and AnnMarie Torres' sacrifice fly put them ahead.

Claire Stringfellow (6-4) battled all game for Mines, allowing three earned with three strikeouts. Surface (15-0) allowed five earned with six strikeouts.

GAME 2 - #1 Colorado Mesa 12, Mines 3 (6 inn.)
Six Colorado Mesa home runs made the difference as they took game two 12-3.

CMU went long twice in the first inning to lead 5-0, then tacked on two more runs in the fifth to make it 7-0. Mines also got into the longball game as Dickson went yard for the second time on the day before Dempsey added another two batters later in the sixth to make it 7-3; Hodgson and Abby Toller tacked on their own homers in the sixth to end it early at 12-3.

Hallie Smith (6-6) got the start and the decision allowing four earned. Maddie Rogers threw an inning of relief with one run allowed while Sydney Marchando threw 4.1 innings allowing five earned. Kimbri Herring (10-0) struck out nine in the win.
