2018 USATF Junior Championships Results
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Rising sophomore
Gina Coleman advanced to the finals on a national stage for the second time in less than 30 days Friday as she took fourth place in the discus at the 2018 USA Track & Field (USATF) Junior Outdoor Championships at the Haugh Complex on the campus of Indiana University.
Coleman posted a career-best mark of 51.93 meters (170-4.0) as she outperformed competitors from Notre Dame, Kansas State, Ole Miss, Arizona, Wisconsin and Iowa State. The fourth-place finish matches her All-American performance at the 2018 NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships May 24-26 in Charlotte, N.C. where she broke her own Mines discus record with a mark of 51.67 meters (169-6.0).
Her initial throw of 48.21 meters (158-2.0), put Coleman put in third place after the first round. The Fountain, Colo., native improved her distance in three straight attempts, rising as high as second in the field of 17 competitors.
Coleman's best throw of the day came in the first round of finals (fourth overall) where she cemented her fourth-place finish, breaking 170 feet in competition for the first time in her career. Only two NCAA Division I throwers finished higher than Coleman as Alyssa Wilson (UCLA) and Ashley Anumba (Penn) took second and third, respectively.
The USATF Junior Outdoor Championships feature the nation's top junior athletes with nearly 500 collegiate and high school track and field stars, ages 14-19. Running June 15-17, competitors are vying for spots on Team USATF as the championships serve as the selection meet for the IAAF World U20 Championships to be held in Tampere, Finland July 10-15.
As a true freshman for the Mines Women's Track and Field team, Coleman broke program records in the discus (outdoor), hammer (outdoor) and weight throw (indoor). She also jumped into Mines' top-10 in the indoor and outdoor shot put and the javelin. Coleman was named RMAC Freshman of the Year for the outdoor season and took home three First-Team All-RMAC honors. The defending RMAC Champion in the discus returns for her sophomore season in 2018-19.
