Stanley Strikes Gold at CSU-Pueblo; Mines Takes 3-2 OT Win

PUEBLO, Colo. – Talon Stanley scored the golden goal for the Colorado School of Mines Men's Soccer team Friday night as the Orediggers took a 2-1, overtime thriller from CSU-Pueblo on a cool, breezy night at Gonzales Soccer Stadium.

John Haist and Matthew Summerfield joined Stanley in the goals column with one tally each. Lucas King and Haist put their names in the assist column. Haist led all Orediggers with six shots and two on goal while Drew Johnson earned the win in goal, improving to 6-1-0 on the year and in his career.

As a team, Mines (6-1-0, 3-0-0 RMAC) edged CSU-Pueblo (3-3-1, 0-2-1 RMAC) in shot attempts, 18-16. The ThunderWolves put two more shots on goal (8-6) than the Orediggers but could not convert their attempts into points.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Mines led a majority of the match thanks to Haist's strike in the 14'. King played a pass to his striker near the top of the 18-yard box, and a misstep by the CSUP goalkeeper allowed Haist to walk the ball into the net.

Both teams went scoreless for the next 58 minutes of action. Mines provided a flurry of shots in the 65th minute, with five attempts in less than 120 seconds including one save, a post and a crossbar – but no goal.

The ThunderWolves found their first equalizer in the 72nd minute as Brayden Ballman scored unassisted in a scramble in front of the goal. However, the Orediggers responded just five minutes later as Summerfield put the ball inside the right post off a rebound from Haist.

CSU-Pueblo tied the match again in the 82nd minute. Mike Chism's corner kick led to Cesar Zamudio's second goal of the season to make it 2-2 and take the match to the end of regulation.

Mines wasted no time in the extra period. In the 95th minute, Stanley found the ball near midfield and took off on a breakaway. He let loose two steps inside the 18-yard line and found the back of the net to give the Orediggers the victory.
