GOLDEN, Colo. – The crosstown rivalry between the #18-ranked Colorado School of Mines Men's Soccer team and MSU Denver continued Friday night with a 2-0, shutout victory for the Orediggers as
John Haist scored the 50th goal of his career.
Haist's tally marks his eighth of the season as he finished the match with seven shots, placing four on goal.
Ford Edwards also scored for Mines, his second of the season. Edwards recorded four shots in the match while
Jason Zobott joined the party with three attempts of his own.
Ben Overholt notched the lone assist of the evening, giving him three on the year.
Defensively, goalkeeper
Drew Johnson needed just one save to earn his fifth shutout of the season. Mines' defense limited the Roadrunners to just eight total attempts as only one found the frame.
As a team, the Orediggers (8-1-0, 5-0-0 RMAC) outshot MSU Denver 23-8 as Mines extended its winning streak to seven straight matches. With the loss, MSUD falls to 3-6-0 overall and 2-3-0 in the RMAC.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The tone was set early in the match with multiple fouls and a pair of cautions in the first 10 minutes of action. Despite averaging nearly three goals per game this season, Mines struggled to find the net early. However, Haist broke the drought in the 31st minute thanks to a cross from the right side from Overholt.
It was not long until Edwards made it 2-0 Orediggers as he headed in a punch-out by the Roadrunner goalkeeper in the 37th minute. The quick scoring burst would be all for either team as defense reigned supreme between the longtime rivals. Mines closed the match limiting MSU Denver to just two attempts in the second half.
