GOLDEN, Colo. - Second-half strikes by
Jennifer Kendall and
Emily Townsend lifted #10 Colorado School of Mines to a 2-0 shutout of St. Edward's in their home opener.
The Orediggers (2-0-1) poured on the pressure to produce both goals after the break, outshooting the Hilltoppers (0-2-0) 18-5 overall and 13-3 in the second half alone.
The Mines defense was unbreakable, allowing just one shot on goal - an easy long-range save for
Shannon Mooney in the second half - to stretch its scoreless streak to 290 minutes to begin the season.
After a forgettable first half saw SEU own a possession advantage but neither team create a good scoring opportunity, Mines came out of the break with a period of sustained pressure that resulted in their 63rd-minute goal. Kendall worked a run into the box into a hard shot that came back off a defender, and the senior one-timed her own rebound to the far post to make it 1-0.
The Orediggers continued to control from there and got the insurance goal in the 83rd minute when Townsend headed home
Nicole LaTourette's corner kick.
