GOLDEN, Colo. - #14 Colorado School of Mines bounced back with a 5-1 win over rival MSU Denver in blustery conditions at Stermole Stadium.
The game was defined by very windy conditions blowing from one end of the field to the other, with gale-force gusts at times causing multiple delays as goals blew out of place. Mines (12-2-1, 8-1-1 RMAC) found success attacking into the wind in the first half, however, scoring three goals before the break thanks to crisp ground passing.
MSU Denver (6-7-2, 5-3-2 RMAC), which came into the game in third place in the RMAC, had chances but
Shannon Mooney made a career-high eight saves to preserve Mines' early lead. Mines outshot the Roadrunners 17-10.
Nicole LaTourette got the scoring going in the 15th minute with a terrific far-post finish from
Meg Zimmerman's creation, and Zimmerman struck her own five minutes later to make ti 2-0. The Orediggers got another goal 59 seconds before the half when
Jordan Barnhart took a 30-yard free kick into the wind that bounced through the box untouched for a goal.
The Roadrunners' lone goal came on a Gabriella Gamboa penalty kick in the 64th minute, but Mines shut down any hopes the visitors had of a comeback with two more goals before fulltime.
Kaylee Kennedy's 72nd-minute cross grazed off the goalkeeper's gloves and fell to
Hannah Rowan to slam home from point-blank range, and
Karolina Sidebaeck iced the game in the 88th minute with a cross-body far-post finish.
