RAPID CITY, S.D. – The #18-ranked Colorado School of Mines Men's Soccer team closed its regular-season road schedule on Friday afternoon with a dominant, 4-0 win over South Dakota Mines at Sioux Park Stadium.
Seven different Orediggers tallied points in the victory with
Talon Stanley,
Ben Overholt and
Baptiste Debuire scoring the goals while
Patrick Allan,
Ian Kugler and
Adam Kindorf chipped in the assists. In the shots column, it was
Jason Zobott and Overholt leading the way with three attempts each. Overholt and Debuire both put two shots on goal while Debuire, Overholt and
Jacob Eanes notched multiple attempts as well.
Drew Johnson earned the win in goal and split the shutout with
Brian Doherty who also saw nearly 30 minutes of action. No saves were required in the shutout victory.
Mines (12-3-2, 10-1-2 RMAC) not only dominated offensively, but also held the Hardrockers (3-11-1, 2-10-1 RMAC) to zero shot attempts over 90 minutes. Meanwhile, the Orediggers racked up 18 shots of their own and put 10 of those shots on target. That production gave the SDSMT goalkeeper six saves in the loss. With the win, Mines pads its lead atop the RMAC standings. The Orediggers need just three more points or a Regis loss or draw to clinch a share of the 2019 RMAC title. Additionally, Dixie State's 2-0 win over Westminster on Friday afternoon clinches a first-round bye for the Orediggers in the 2019 RMAC Tournament.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Orediggers and Hardrockers were greeted by blustery skies and temperatures just above freezing on Friday afternoon in Rapid City, but it seemed to have no effect on the visitors' offense. Less than 10 minutes into the match, the seventh minute to be exact, Colorado School of Mines got on the board thanks to a goal from Stanley off the assist from Allan. The first-half scoring continued in the 31st minute as Overholt notched his tally off a pass from Kugler. Then, SDSMT scored the ever-dreaded own-goal to make the score 3-0 in favor of the Orediggers with just 1:03 remaining in the opening period.
In the second half, overcast skies gave way to a bit of sunshine. The Orediggers appeared to take advantage early, but the potential fourth goal was waved off less than five minutes into the period. Over the next 41 minutes of action, Colorado School of Mines created plenty of opportunities and Debuire finally broke the scoring silence in the 86th minute. A long pass from Kindorf found Debuire inside the penalty area and he one-touched it to the back of the net for a 4-0, Oredigger lead. That would mark the final tally as the clock hit zero giving Mines the victory.
