Â
ONE LAST TIME
Colorado School of Mines (14-2-1, 10-1-1 RMAC) closes the regular season Sunday at home against Colorado Christian (4-9-1, 2-7-1 RMAC) in a rare one-game weekend for the Orediggers. As it's the final day of the regular season, all women's matches across the RMAC will kick off at 11 a.m.
THE POSTSEASON
Mines is locked into no worse than the #2 seed at 31 points. UCCS leads the RMAC with 33 points but has two games left to play; they need two points out of their last two games with Black Hills State and Regis to clinch the regular-season championship. As the likely #2 seed, the Orediggers would host one half of the RMAC Tournament quarterfinals and semifinals bracket, with two quarterfinals on Friday Nov. 8 (Mines at noon vs. the #7 seed, with the #3 vs. #6 game to follow), then the semifinal on Sunday, Nov. 10 at noon. Potential quarterfinal opponents are all over the board as four teams – CSU-Pueblo, MSU Denver, Colorado Mesa, and Fort Lewis – are within two points of each other for sixth place in the table.
SENIOR DAY
Sunday will be the final regular-season home game for Mines' accomplished class of six seniors.
Mickey Hostetler,
Nicole LaTourette,
Shannon Mooney,
Audrey Shin,
Giselle Sawaged, and
Lindsey Tornabene will graduate having already won two RMAC regular-season titles, two RMAC Tournament crowns, and have already made three NCAA Tournament appearances with a strong chance for a fourth. They are a combined 70-10-5 over the last four years.
LAST WEEK
Mines cruised 5-0 at Black Hills State on goals by
Kaylee Kennedy,
Brooke Patterson,
Amena Nelson, and a brace from
Emi Higgins. The Orediggers had to turn around and play at Regis 24 hours later due to the recent snow, and found themselves locked in a scoreless battle until Higgins scored with 1:14 left in regulation, on a cross from Kennedy, to provide Mines with the 1-0 win.
Shannon Mooney made four saves in the shutout.
MOONEY EARNS SECOND RMAC AWARD OF THE YEAR
For her work in two shutouts last weekend,
Shannon Mooney was named the RMAC Goalkeeper of the Week for the second time this season. Mooney made two saves in just over an hour at Black Hills State to combine with
Sierra Roth for the clean sheet; at Regis, she had four saves in Mines' critical 1-0 win. Mooney has won the award four times in her career and this year sports a 0.50 GAA and career-best .869 save percentage.
IN THE POLLS
Mines bumped up one spot to #16 in this week's United Soccer Coaches' national poll. The Orediggers have been nationally ranked in 72 of the last 80 polls.
EVERYBODY SCORES
When
Amena Nelson and
Brooke Patterson scored their first collegiate goals at Black Hills State, they became the 17th and 18th different players to score for the Orediggers this year. That ties the 2016 team for most different goalscorers in a season in program history; last year, Mines had just 12 players score in the full 22-match season.
SCOUTING COLORADO CHRISTIAN [SERIES: Mines, 22-0-1]
CCU has had a tough season at 4-10-1 overall, and have lost seven straight coming into the weekend. Amanda Lopez leads the team with four goals and Saige Stock has three; Sarah Feller has handed out a team-high three assists. Ireland VanDyke has played the bulk of time in goal with a .730 save percentage and 2.30 GAA. Mines has won 20 straight in the series and their only tie came back in 2006. Last year Mines and CCU played twice; the Orediggers won 4-1 in the RMAC Tournament quarterfinals on goals by
Giselle Sawaged,
Emily Townsend,
Taylor McRae, and
Jennifer Kendall, and in the regular season it was a 2-0 decision thanks to Townsend and
Audrey Shin. Among active Orediggers,
Nicole LaTourette has also scored against the Cougars in their 2017 meeting.
