#16 Mines Knocked Out By #9 DBU In PKs

DALLAS - Penalty kicks decided a 1-1 draw as #9 Dallas Baptist advanced over #16 Colorado School of Mines in the NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Championship Second Round.

The unbeaten Patriots (17-0-3) won the penalty shootout 5-4 after Emmy Niece's equalizer with 1:08 left in regulation forced overtime. The Orediggers end their season at 19-2-2 after making their 12th consecutive NCAA appearance.

Mines had better chances in a tentative first half for both teams as the Orediggers outshot DBU 3-1 and held the Patriots without a shot on goal. Mines' breakthrough came in the 65th minute on a corner kick as Nicole LaTourette finished off Jordan Barnhart's take for a 1-0 lead.

The Orediggers controlled the final half hour until a late flurry by DBU produced the winner. Shannon Mooney was equal to a Catherine Klein shot in the 83rd minute, but Kaci Parks created Niece's goal in the 89th minute to send the game into overtime. Neither team had a chance in the first OT and one each in the second to send it into penalties.

The penalty shootout was ultimately decided on the first kick as Hope Koym saved LaTourettes's opener. Giselle Sawaged, Hannah Rowan, Jordan Barnhart, and Zoe Sano all made their PKs, but DBU went 5-for-5 to win it on Margaret Torres' conversion in the fifth round.
