ALOHA, HAWAII
Colorado School of Mines wraps up the fall semester with a pre-holiday trip to play three games in the Hoops In Hawaii D2 Power Invitational, set to take place at the Hawaii Convention Center in Honolulu. The Orediggers will take on Saint Martin's Thursday, Simon Fraser Friday, and #21 Southeastern Oklahoma State on Saturday; Thursday's game is a 2 p.m. Hawaiian/5 p.m. Mountain start, while the latter two games will be a night owl special for fans back home as they aren't slated to tip off until 8 p.m. Hawaiian/11 p.m. Mountain. Live video for each game is provided by the tournament hosts.
MINES IN HAWAII
The Orediggers are visiting the Aloha State for the second time, having made a two-game swing through the islands in 2007-08. They beat Hawai'i Pacific 73-61 in their first game in Honolulu, but lost 83-68 to Seattle Pacific on the campus of BYU-Hawaii in Laie.
LOOKING BACK AT THE TEENS
This weekend's tournament will be the final games of the decade for Mines basketball – and what a decade it was. The Orediggers were the RMAC's dominant program in the 2010s, going a combined 231-69 (.770) since Jan. 1, 2010 and compiling five RMAC regular-season titles, two RMAC Tournament championships, and nine NCAA Tournament appearances, including a 2017 Elite Eight berth. Under head coach
Pryor Orser, Mines is riding a streak of six straight 20+ win seasons.
LAST WEEKEND
Mines produced a 2-0 weekend with road wins at Colorado Christian and Regis. Friday at CCU,
Mason Baker drained 27 points and Mines shot a season-best .586 to win 86-78; the Cougars led by as much as five in the final 10 minutes, but a 14-2 Oredigger run was decisive. On Saturday at Regis, it was
Kobi Betts who starred as he scored a career-high 20, including the game-winning shot with 0.4 seconds left, to win 70-68. Mines was held to a season-low .393 shooting clip but sank eight three-pointers including
Brendan Sullivan's 4-for-5 night on the way to 16 points.
MINES QUICK LOOK
After an uneven start to the season, Mines has won their last four games to produce a 4-1 start to RMAC play and a 6-3 start overall. In addition to last week's wins against CCU and Regis, Mines owns victories over Lubbock Christian, Fort Hays State, Western Colorado, and Colorado Mesa. The Orediggers have had a tough early schedule playing just one team with a losing record (CCU) over nine games; that streak continues this weekend against three opponents that are a combined 17-6. Mines is averaging 80.1 points per game to 72.1 allowed and is outrebounding opponents by a +3.4 margin.
Individually,
Mason Baker has been one of the RMAC's top scorers averaging 20.2 points, 4.8 assists, and 4.3 rebounds per game, all career season highs.
Brendan Sullivan is also averaging a career-high 16.6 points per game, while
Michael Glen (11.8 ppg/6.7 rpg) and
Titus Reed (11.2 ppg/3.8 rpg) have anchored the front court with
Ben Boone adding 6.9 points per game. Mines shoots the 3 very well at a .423 clip, which ranks eighth in NCAA Division II; Baker checks in at .559 (19-of-34) and Sullivan an exceptional .680 (17-of-25).
SCOUTING SAINT MARTIN'S [Series: Saint Martin's, 4-1]
Mines meets Saint Martin's for the first time since 2010-11 and the fifth time ever. The Saints are 4-4, starting 1-4 (which included losses to RMAC teams Westminster and Dixie State) but winning their last three. They're led by Demonte Malloy's 16.1 points and 7.9 rebounds per game; CJ Jennings scores 15.6 a game and Alex Schumacher has 14.8, while 6-9 center Marky Adams has five double-doubles in eight games averaging 11.4 points, 9.4 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks per game.
SCOUTING SIMON FRASER [Series: First Meeting]
Mines will play Simon Fraser – the NCAA's only Canadian member – for the first time as the Clan are off to an impressive 7-1 start. Since losing to nationally-ranked UC San Diego in their season opener, SFU has reeled off seven straight wins behind a high-octane offense averaging 89 points per game. All five of their starters average double digits in scoring led by Jasdeep Singh's 19.4 ppg and Wilfried Balata's 17.6 points and 8.4 rebounds per night. Othniel Spence (14.9 ppg), Michael Provenzano (12.2 ppg/4.7 apg), and Julian Roche (10.8 ppg/7.4 rpg) have also impressed.
SCOUTING #21 SOUTHEASTERN OKLAHOMA STATE [Series: First Meeting]
A tough Southeastern Oklahoma State team awaits Mines in the trip's final game as they two square off for the first time ever. The Storm are ranked #21 in the newest NABC poll at 6-1 overall; they started 5-0 before losing to Southern Nazarene on Saturday. They are another high-scoring team averaging 86 points per game and shooting an impressive .483. Kevin Buckingham's 19.3 points per game leads the team while 6-8 forward Kayo Goncalves produces 16.7 points and 8.9 rebounds per game. The entire Storm starting lineup averages 12+ per game with A'Torey Everett (15.4 ppg), Adam Dworsky (12.7 ppg), and Kellen Manek (12.3 ppg) pacing the offense; Dworsky leads NCAA Division II with an incredible 11.1 assists per game.
