Mines Ends Hawaii Trip With Setback To #21 SEOSU

HONOLULU - #21 Southeastern Oklahoma State did just enough to hold off Colorado School of Mines, winning the final game of the Hoops In Hawaii Classic 59-57 at the Hawai'i Convention Center.

The Orediggers (8-4) saw their six-game win streak snapped despite 14 points each by Michael Glen and Mason Baker. The Savage Storm (8-2) were led by tournament MVP Kevin Buckingham's 18 and Bobby Johnson's 13 off the bench.

Titus Reed added 12 first-half points, while Brendan Sullivan added six points and eight rebounds. Sullivan was named to the all-tournament first team after the game.

It was a game of runs as the Savage Storm took control with a 12-2 stretch midway through the first half, but Mines climbed back in with an 8-0 start to the second half. The Orediggers never led again after Southeastern answered with a 6-0 run of their own, but they pulled within one on several occassions in the second half.

Back-to-back Glen baskets made it a 53-52 Southeastern lead with 3:48 to go in the game, but Buckingham's foul shots and a subsequent field goal put the Storm back up 57-52 at the 2:59 mark.

Ben Boone worked an inside bucket to cut the deficit to 57-54, and the Savage Storm threw the ball away with a minute remaining, but Mines couldn't cash in and sent SEOSU back to the line where Johnson made both to re-establish a two-score advantage. Baker shook two defenders to drain a three with 25.6 seconds to go, making it 59-57. Mines didn't foul off the inbounds, and the Storm threw it away to Baker, who had one last look for three to win it fall short at the buzzer as he shot through contact.
