GOLDEN, Colo. – True freshman
Hannah Miller stole the show on day one of the 2019 Mines Alumni Classic & Multi as she shattered the Colorado School of Mines Women's Track & Field record in the pole vault inside historic Steinhauer Fieldhouse. Â
Â
In the first appearance of her collegiate career, Miller cleared 3.81 meters (12-6.0) to best the previous top mark of 3.67 meters (12-0.5) set in 2011 by Briana Suppes. Miller passed the first three bars and came in at 3.51 meters (11-6.25). She required just one attempt at that height and the next bar of 3.66 meters (12-0.0) before using all three attempts at the record-setting mark. On her very last try, Miller soared over the bar and into the Oredigger record book. Her clearance also goes down as a NCAA provisional qualifying height which potentially sends the true freshman to the NCAA National Championships in March. Other pole vault performances included 3.51 meters (11-6.25) for Gabi Griner and 3.21 meters (10-6.25) for
Gabbi Varela in her Oredigger debut.
Â
Mines' men were also impressive in the pole vault.
Jake Pinkston,
Brandon Hinkle and
Zach Clark took the top three spots among collegiate competitors. Pinkston posted a mark of 5.02 meters (16-5.5) which provisionally qualified him for the NCAA Championships. Hinkle opened his season at 4.77 meters (15-7.75) and
Zach Clark finished the day good at 4.62 meters (15-1.75).
Ben Twombly joined the Oredigger party with a seventh-place finish on misses and matched Clark at 4.62 meters (15-1.75) as well.
Â
However, if not for the pole vaulting performances, the story of the day was arguably
Connor McLean in the heptathlon. Through four events, McLean turned in the top performance of any NCAA Division II competitor thanks to 2,970 points. That puts
Connor McLean on pace to shatter his own program record in the event. Part of his outstanding day included a time of 7.03 in the 60-meter dash which ranks #4 in program history. Joining
Connor McLean in the multi were
Hayden Sather and
Chase McLean who tout day-one scores of 2,739 and 2,666, respectively.
Â
Additional highlights from the day included a personal best from
Arvid Veidmark IV in the weight throw. He heaved it 16.51 meters (54-2.0) which ranks #6 all-time at Mines.
Sophia Collins moved up in the Oredigger record book as well thanks to a leap of 5.42 meters (17-9.50) in the long jump – good enough for #4 in Mines history.
Reilly West improved her personal best in the shot put and put her name at #6 in program history, throwing it 12.24 meters (40-2.0). Teammate
Krista Carlo did the same in the weight throw as the top collegiate performer. Her toss of 16.27 meters (53-4.50) ranks her second all-time at Mines.
Â
On the track, the only event was the mile run, and the Orediggers dominated that as well. For the men,
Vincent Workman won the event and provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships thanks to a raw time of 4:16.74.
Miller Kettle also took fifth in 4:42.32.
Alex Raichart raced as the only Oredigger for the women and finished third in 5:26.88.
