DENVER – The Colorado School of Mines Volleyball team saw its historic postseason run come to a close on Saturday night in a three-set loss to #11-ranked Regis inside Regis Fieldhouse in the 2019 NCAA South Central Regional Tournament Championship match.
Against a stifling defense,
Lindsey Jin led Mines with seven kills on 25 attempts and one service ace. The Oredigger trio of
Rose Stuewe,
Abby Tiesman and
Julia Eiken also combined for 16 kills.
Elle Duis notched 11 digs in the back row while
Amanda Donais,
Drew Stokes and Tiesman all recorded two blocks apiece. Stokes added 22 assists, seven digs and one kill over three sets. Tiesman, Stokes, Duis and Eiken each claimed all-tournament distinction for the Orediggers.
As a team, Mines (25-7) ran up against a Regis (28-4) defense that produced 15 blocks on the night. That kept the Orediggers to .084 on the attack. The Rangers hit .337 despite five blocks from Mines. The loss marked the Orediggers' first since October as their 10-mach winning streak come to a close.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Another beautiful day and scenic sunset brought fans flocking to Regis Fieldhouse. With a berth in the Elite Eight and a regional title on the line, the crowd proved primed and ready to cheer. However, most of the cheering in the first set came from the home crowd. Regis never trailed in the opening frame, but Mines did tie it up twice. Five blocks by the Rangers proved too much for the Orediggers as RU claimed the opening set, 25-18. Mines' set-one production featured three kills apiece from Donais and Eiken.
The second and third sets saw the Orediggers jump out to early leads, but the Regis defense did not let up. Four Ranger blocks in game two offset six combined kills from Tiesman and Donais. Jin came out firing with four kills in the third frame, but RU came up with six more blocks. The Ranger offense also remained efficient despite three blocks for Mines in the second set. Regis hit over .300 in every set for wins of 25-20 and 25-12 on the way to victory.
