Baseball Falls to Angelo State on Opening Day

SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Colorado School of Mines Baseball team dropped its season opener Friday, falling to Angelo State 14-1 at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium.

Derek Daly accounted for Mines' lone run as he went 1-for-2 with a solo home run. Jace Selsor, Mikey Gangwish and Phil VanZale also recorded one hit apiece for the Orediggers. Starting pitcher Owen Pigati (0-1) took the loss despite striking out four batters in 2.1 innings of work. He gave up six runs on nine hits in the same span. Ian Durgin, Nate Giefer and Nick Gardner all appeared out of the bullpen.

As a team, Mines (0-1) recorded four hits while Oredigger pitchers combined to strikeout nine Rams batters. Brandon Dusenberry (1-0) earned the decision for Angelo State (1-0) with a complete-game, seven-inning victory. Josh Elvir led the Rams' offense, going 3-for-3 with three runs and five RBI on two home runs and a double.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Gangwish and Daly provided an early spark for the Orediggers in the opening frame. Gangwish smacked two-out single to center field and Daly was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. However, Angelo State worked a ground ball to third base to get out of the jam.

In the bottom of the first inning, ASU worked a leadoff walk to start its season and never looked back. The Rams scored at least one run in every inning, including four in the second and five in the fifth. Durgin provided Mines a bright spot on the mound in the bottom of the fourth inning by striking out the side after Daly broke up the shutout in the top half with his opposite-field home run to right.

One out from Giefer in the top of the sixth brought in Gardner to finish it out. The redshirt-junior, Texas native tossed the final 1.2 innings with two strikeouts and no walks.
