Box Score DENVER, Colo. - Colorado School of Mines picked up its first win of the season thanks to
Megan Dickson's walk-off sacrifice fly to score
Kendall Murphy, beating Montana State Billings 4-3 in eight innings.
The Orediggers (1-7) were slated to play two against the Yellowjackets (6-7) but the second game was halted due to a snow squall in the first inning and ultimately cancelled due to field conditions. The game was played at MSU Denver's Regency Athletic Complex.
Murphy had a hand in all four of Mines' runs, smacking a bases-loaded three-run double in the fifth and then scoring from third in the eighth.
Katie Leiker went 2-for-3 and
Kelsey Buechler was 2-for-4 in the game.
It was a game of missed opportunities for both teams as Mines left 13 runners on base and MSUB stranded 14, including two in scoring position in the eighth. Both teams generated eight hits.
Brittanee Fisher opened the scoring in the first for MSUB with a double to score Rylan Austin, and the Yellowjackets doubled the lead in the fifth when Morgan Quimby flied out to score Georgiabelle Benning from third. After leaving the bases juiced in the third and fourth innings, Mines' breakthrough came in the fifth when Murphy tucked a bases-loaded double inside the leftfield line to give Mines a 3-2 lead.
Montana State Billings answered right back with a quick run in the sixth when Benning scored from second on a Cailee Morgan single to center. That made it 3-3 and after a scoreless seventh, the game headed to extras with the international tiebreaker in effect. MSUB quickly got runners to second and third after a sacrifice bunt, hit-by-pitch, an stolen base, but
Sydney Marchando induced back-to-back infield popups, including snagging her own third out, to escape the inning.
In the bottom of the eighth, Murphy was placed on second and after
Katie Leiker walked to lead off,
Clara Larson's sacrifice moved both runners over. That set up Dickson, who hit a ball just deep enough into left to bring Murphy across without a play at the plate.
Claire Stringfellow started and took no decision, leaving in the fourth after allowing one run on five hits. Marchando (1-3) picked up the win with five tough innings, working out of several jams and striking out two while giving up two hits. Maddy Lincoln (3-4) was a workhorse for the Yellowjackets, throwing 168 pitches in the complete game effort to strike out five. None of her four runs were earned.
Mines will head to Black Hills State to begin RMAC play next Saturday.
