SENIOR NIGHT – 2019
The Colorado School of Mines Women's Basketball team welcomes UCCS to Golden Friday night for its regular-season finale and Senior Night. However, there's more on the line than just celebrating four stellar careers. Mines is battling for seeding in the 2019 RMAC Tournament. If the Orediggers win they clinch a top-four seed and the right to host a quarterfinal matchup inside Lockridge Arena. A loss would drop Mines out of the top four and put it on the road for the first-round, Tuesday showdown. Either way, the Orediggers will be playing the RMAC postseason next week and celebrating its seniors inside Lockridge Arena on Friday night.
LAST WEEKEND
It was a tough road trip to South Dakota for Mines last weekend. The Orediggers went 0-2 as they fell to Black Hills State on Friday and South Dakota Mines on Saturday. Friday's 64-51 loss came despite 17 points and nine rebounds from
Nicole Archambeau.
Anna Kollmorgen also scored 10 points to join her teammate in double digits. Saturday's loss was even more heartbreaking as Mines fell 56-54 on SDSMT's Senior Night.
Denali Pinto dropped 25 points and grabbed nine boards in the effort and Kollmorgen scored 10 more with eight rebounds.
SCOUTING UCCS
UCCS comes into Golden still vying for a berth in the RMAC Tournament. At 13-14 overall and 12-9 in conference play, the Mountain Lions are also jousting for the right to host next Tuesday. Just like Mines, UCCS also went 0-2 in South Dakota last weekend and have lost three of its last four. If the Mountain Lions win, they jump into the top four. However, if they lose it could move them all the way to #8. Nobody for UCCS averages double-digit scoring. Madi Gaibler leads the team with 8.0 points per game. Jae Ferrin is tops in rebounding with 4.8 boards per game. They may not appear threatening on paper, but the Mountain Lions rank #47 in the nation with 400 total assists and #43 in combined three-point field-goal percentage. Individually, Chelsea Pearson is #13 in DII with a three-point percentage of 42.4.
WORTH ONE DOLLAR
There seems to be very few fun facts remaining on mountain lions. However, the history of UCCS's campus provides a wealth of interesting tidbits. The campus was originally Cragmor Sanatorium, essentially a rehab facility/hospital, opened in 1905 and nicknamed "Sun Palace". The health spa's white-collar clientele led to its demise during The Great Depression. Despite efforts to revive the Sanatorium, it was eventually sold to the State of Colorado for one dollar in 1964 and became property of the University of Colorado. Thus, UCCS was born – for the price of a candy bar. And now you know.
LOCKRIDGE ARENA
Fondly referred to as "The Lock", Mines' home court for volleyball, men's basketball and women's basketball features seating for 3,000 at Oredigger home athletics events. The venue has also twice hosted the NCAA Division II Men's Basketball South Central Regional Tournament. Additionally, Lockridge Arena hosts numerous major campus events and has been graced by the presence of Barack Obama, Neil DeGrasse Tyson, Bill Nye and many others.
SERIES HISTORY
Mines is 18-21 in the all-time series against UCCS. The Orediggers' last win over the Mountain Lions came Feb. 23, 2018 near the end of last season. It was an 81-68 victory that featured 28 points from then senior
Emily Bailey and 16 more points from
Anna Kollmorgen. Mines dropped the first-round matchup earlier this season in Colorado Springs by a margin of 73-69. In that contest,
Denali Pinto led all players with 22 points. Kollmorgen dropped 16 more (seems to be a theme) and
Raven Herrera notched a 14-point, 12-rebound double-double. The difference in the game came from behind the arc as UCCS shot 47.8 percent from long range in the game with 11 made three-point baskets.
2018-19 SENIOR CLASS
The Orediggers' 2018-19 senior class features four individuals including
Cassidy Budge,
Anna Kollmorgen,
Madelene McDonald and
Nicole Archambeau. Boasting two four-year players and two tranfers, Mines' senior quartet touts a combined overall record of 72-43 (.626) while going 60-27 (.690) in RMAC play. In total, the Oredigger seniors have combined to score 2,463 points with a total of 1,502 rebounds while dishing out 572 assists. Budge currently ranks #3 all-time at Mines for made three-point field goals. Kollmorgen currently sits #3 in all-time assists for the Orediggers. Overall, the senior class claimed eight references in Mines' record book. The duo of Budge and Kollmorgen were also part of the Orediggers' first outright RMAC Championship and second-ever trip to NCAA Tournament as freshmen in 2015-16. With Mines' berth in the RMAC postseason, Budge and Kollmorgen will play in their fourth-straight conference tournament.
RMAC TOURNAMENT BREAKDOWN
With one game left to play in the regular season, there is finally some clarity in the RMAC standings. Colorado Mesa (22-3, 19-2) is the #1 seed and outright regular-season champion. Westminster (19-6, 17-4) is the undisputed #2 team in the league. Presumably, MSU Denver (15-12, 14-7) will claim the #3 seed since the Roadrunners hold a one-game edge on Mines with its final game at home against Chadron State. If Mines wins, the Orediggers clinch the #4 seed as they hold a one-game lead on Black Hills State, Western, CSU-Pueblo and UCCS. Additionally, CSU-Pueblo has also clinched a berth in the RMAC Tournament. Outside of that, three spots remain for five potential teams including Black Hills State, Western Colorado, UCCS, Regis and Colorado Christian.
DEPARTMENT-WIDE SUCCESS
Across all Oredigger sports in the 2018-19 season, Mines has already won six RMAC regular-season and two RMAC Tournament championships this year. That marks the most regular-season titles ever in a year for Mines Athletics and has already tied the total RMAC championships in a year at eight, set in both 2015-16 and 2016-17.
LOOKING AHEAD
Mines knows it will be playing a game on Tuesday, March 5. Location, opponent and time will be determined following the conclusion of Friday night's RMAC slate. That information will be relayed to fans
