GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - Dominating pitching led #2/5 Colorado Mesa to a 7-1 win over #13/9 Colorado School of Mines in their RMAC series opener on Friday at Suplizio Field.
The Orediggers (13-3, 4-1 RMAC) saw their 12-game winning streak snapped thanks to a gem from JR McDermott, who struck out a dozen and carried a no-hitter into the fifth for the Mavericks (17-2, 5-0 RMAC).
Derek Daly hit his league-leading 10th home run of the year for Mines' lone run in the game, while
John Howard had a 2-for-4 night.
Tyler Blomster (3-2) fanned seven in six innings of work for the Orediggers.
CMU took an early lead on Caleb Farmer's two-run home run in the first, then extended the lead to 3-0 when a Spencer Bramwell single scored Hunter Douglas in the third. Mines' bats got going in the fifth as consecutive singles by
Mikey Gangwish,
Joe Popp, and
John Howard loaded the bases, but McDermott worked out of the jam with two strikeouts and a grounder to preserve the shutout. The Mavs supported their pitcher with two more runs in the fifth on back-to-back doubles by Jordan Stubbings and Dominic DeMarco.
A two-run Douglas single in the eighth made it 7-0 for the Mavericks, but Daly launched his solo shot to lead off the ninth and get Mines on the board.
Nate Giefer (1.1 IP) and
Mitch Menard (0.2 IP) worked in relief for Mines while Ryan Overboe threw the ninth for Mesa.
The two teams will play a twinbill Saturday starting at 1 p.m.
