GAME 1 - Mines 7, Chadron State 3
Mines took advantage of 15 walks and
Kara Jones' 4-RBI game to beat Chadron State 7-3 in the pod opener.
Jones' bases-loaded double in the second and
Kendall Murphy's two-run double in the fifth keyed the win as Mines scored seven runs off only five hits thanks to a game in which six players walked multiple times, including
Katie Leiker and
Kelsey Buechler, who earned three free passes each. Jones tied her career high with four runs driven in.
Mines' 15 walks were one short of the RMAC record of 16 set by Fort Lewis in 1990. The Orediggers easily surpassed the program record of 12 set against Tarleton State in 2012.
Sydney Marchando improved to 6-3 with five strikeouts, scattering five hits in the game. Megan Horn (3-5) allowed 11 walks and four earned runs in 4.2 innings of work while Cassidy Horn did not allow a run in 2.1 innings of relief for CSC.
The Eagles struck in the first with a run off Haleigh Hoefs' double, but Mines quickly got back into it in the second as two walks and an error loaded the bases for
Katie Leiker, who walked on four pitched to make it 1-1. Two batters later, with the bases still juiced, Jones roped a double to center to score all three runners and take a 4-1 lead.
Hoefs smacked a two-run home run in the third to cut the Mines lead to 4-3, but the Orediggers responded in the fifth with a two-out rally to score three runs.
Stefanie Brunello got it going with a bunt single before Buechler walked, and Murphy's double to the gap scored both baserunners before Jones drew a bases-loaded walk later in the inning to make it 7-3.
Meanwhile, Marchando retired 14 of her last 16 batters faced to shut down the Eagles following Hoefs' home run.
GAME 2 - Mines 10, Adams State 0 (5 inn.)
Clara Larson's four RBI and
Katie Leiker's 4-for-4 game helped Colorado School of Mines rout Adams State 10-0 in a run-rule victory to end Saturday.
The Orediggers improved to 9-10 overall and 8-3 in RMAC play with the win. Leiker and
Kendall Murphy each scored three runs as that pair plus Larson and
Kara Jones each had multi-hit games. Larson launched her second home run of the season while Murphy had a pair of doubles to lead the power at the plate.
Claire Stringfellow (3-5) scattered three hits and struck out five to pick up the shutout victory, her first of the season.
Mines wasted no time in scoring as Jones singled in Murphy in the first before Leiker scored on a double-steal with Jones to lead 2-0. In the third, Leiker sparked a four-run rally with an RBI single to plate Murphy before Larson drove her in and
Loren Dempsey - making just her second at-bat of the season after returning from injury - drilled a two-run single to the gap to extend the lead to 6-0.
Larson smashed a three-run homer to left in the fourth to make it 9-0, and Leiker capped the scoring with a fifth-inning single to plate
Stefanie Brunello.
Jade Garbiso (1-12) took the loss allowing nine of the runs in 3.1 innings; Taylor Sandoval threw 1.2 innings of one-run relief for the Grizzlies.
Leiker's four hits were a career high and mark the most by an Oredigger in a game this year.
