Throwers Highlight Mines' Outdoor Opener

PUEBLO, Colo.
- Colorado School of Mines' throwers led the charge in the track & field team's 2019 outdoor opener, winning four of Mines' five event championships at the CSU-Pueblo Early Bird meet.

Jack Root won both the hammer and discus while Courtney Clark and Gina Coleman picked up wins to go with Connor McLean's pole vault victory. The Oredigger sprinters and jumpers also turned in some solid early-season results as the distance crew largely took the meet off after last week's NCAA Indoor Championships.

ON THE TRACK
Gavin Webster led the men's sprinters with a runner-up finish in the 400m dash, finishing in 49.91 with Josh Gregory fourth in 50.09. Jared Tadla ran 11.58 seconds in the 100m dash for seventh, while John Sass was also seventh in the 200m at 22.04.

Chase McLean also scored a runner-up finish in the 110m hurdles in a time of 15.63, while Kevin Thompson ran 2:00.29 in the 800m for fifth with Bryan Gram seventh in 2:01.10. The men's 4x400 took second as Gregory, Webster, McLean, and Thompson put together a 3:20.53 time

For the women, Layla Moriarty and Grace Ford finished fourth and fifth in the 400m dash with times of 1:01.68 and 1:02.05, respectively. Megan Maccagnan took fifth in the 200m dash at 26.60 in a great start to the outdoor season that was just seventh-hundreths off her personal best; Sophia Collins ran 27.41 for 10th and Ford 28.28 for 15th. Kennede Brown finished sixth in the 400m hurdles in 1:08.17 with Allee Beach eighth at 1:09.50. Brown also ran the 100-meter hurldes in 15.92 and Collins joined her in the event with a time of 17.43.. The Mines 4x400 of Ford, Beach, Moriarty, and Mackenzie Duck ran 4:09.43 for fourth. Additionally, Duck led the way in the 800m run with a collegiate debut of 2:18.97 with Bearett Tarris and Jessic Horii running the event as well. 

IN THE CIRCLE
The Mines throwers had a dominating open to the outdoor season, combining to win four events between the men and women.

Courtney Clark won the shot put with a 13.53m (44-4.75) best toss with Gina Coleman taking second at 12.59m (41-3.75). The two flip-flopped in the hammer as Coleman won with a 50.45m (165-6) toss with Clark second at 50.07m (164-3) and Krista Carlo took third with 46.01m (150-11). Mines then took four of the top five spots in the discus as Clark was second overall and first among collegiate competitors with a career-best 42.21m (138-6) heave (third all-time at Mines) ahead of Coleman in third (38.45m/126-02), Kathleen Tomon in fourth (37.67m/123-07), and Carlo in fifth (37.63m/123-05).

Jack Root had himself a meet winning both the discus and hammer. Root threw a career-best 46.79m (153-06) to win the discus, and also topped the hammer by a huge margin with another PR of 57.96m (190-02). 

IN THE FIELD
Fresh off his all-America performance at indoor nationals, Connor McLean led a Mines sweep in the pole vault with a 5.16m (16-11) start to his outdoor season. Brandon Hinkle was second and Ben Twombly third as both cleared 4.70m (15-5), and Zach Clark was seventh at 4.40m (14-5.25). 

Koby Dudley cleared 2.00m (6-6.75), just an inch off his PR, to take second in the men's high jump as Jacob Bejarano and John Reiley tied for fifth completing 1.90m (6-2.75). Luke Arnsberger hit 13.64m (44-9) for third in the triple jump to PR by an inch, while Reiley finished eighth in the long jump (6.39m/20-11.75) two spots ahead of Sass (6.30m/20-8).

Hannah Martin cleared 1.55m (5-1) in the high jump to take second, while Chloe Roth cleared 3.10m (10-2) to tie for fifth in the pole vault. In the horizontals, Ali Artzberger was seventh in the long jump (5.28m/17-4) and fifth in the triple (10.62m/34-10.25) while Sophia Collins took ninth in the long at 5.16m (16-11.25).
