Mines Drops 9-2 Finale to Rangers

DENVER – The Colorado School of Mines Baseball team dropped its Sunday finale to Regis and departed Regis Baseball Field with a series split against the Rangers following their 9-2 loss.

Ben Stinson accounted for all the Orediggers' scoring as he went 2-for-2 with two runs and a home run. Trevor Kehe registered Mines' second RBI and recorded a hit as well. Joe Popp extended his hitting streak to nine games while Mikey Gangwish, Phil VanZale, Derek Daly and Danny McDermott also notched hits for Mines. On the mound, Will Scott made the start and took the loss after 2.2 innings of three-run, five-hit work. The Orediggers used a total of six pitchers in the game.

With the series split, Mines (15-8, 6-6 RMAC) remains in the top six of the RMAC standings, keeping the Orediggers in line for a berth in the conference tournament. Mines finished the weekend series with 24 hits including six for extra bases. Regis (8-17, 3-9 RMAC) claimed its second series split of the season despite hitting just .256 as a team. In total, the Orediggers and Rangers combined to hit seven home runs over four games on the weekend.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Mines saw a promising start to the game with a leadoff single from Kehe in the top of the opening frame. The base-hit did not result in any runs, but Scott and the Orediggers' defense retired the Rangers in order for a shutout inning on both sides of the ball. However, the home team bounced back with three runs on three hits in the bottom of the seconding inning for a 3-0 lead. The Rangers would add five more runs in the fourth stanza, taking an 8-0 advantage over the visitors.

Stinson entered the game as a pinch hitter in the top of the seventh inning and did his best to spark a rally for Mines. With one out, the redshirt junior took one pitch out of the zone before sending the very next pitch over the fence in left field. Stinson struck again in the ninth inning with a two-out single. Kehe drove him home the next at-bat by forcing an error on the Regis left fielder. However, it was too little too late as Regis used nine pitches to work the final out.
