Mines Takes Two From Dixie State To Win Series

DENVER - Colorado School of Mines swept its doubleheader against Dixie State to capture the series, 3-1, and improve to 13-4 in RMAC play.

The Oredigger offense produced 18 hits to support strong pitching in both games as Sydney Marchando earned the win in game one, and Claire Stringfellow the decision in game two. Stringfellow also saved the opener with Kylie Redding saving the second game.

GAME 1 - MINES 3, DIXIE STATE 1
Mines did all of its damage in the first inning and then rode the pitching of Marchando and Stringfellow to win the morning game, 3-1.

Kendall Murphy led off with a home run to set the tone immediately in a three-run first, and the Oredigger pitching and defense took a shutout into the sixth in the victory.

Mines produced four hits in the first started by Murphy, who rocketed a 2-1 pitch over the rightfield fence for her second of the year. Clara Larson doubled two batters later and then scored on Boston Ludlow's single, and Ludlow plated when Megan Dickson doubled her home to lead 3-0.

Dixie State never significantly threatened until the sixth, when they loaded the bases with no outs. Stringfellow entered the game and induced an out at home plate before the Trailblazers notched their only run, a Riley Tyteca single, to cut it to 3-1. With the bases still loaded, however, Stringfellow got a lineout to Stefanie Brunello at third, and then fielded her position for the final out to escape the jam. She worked a four-batter seventh to secure the save.

Marchando improved to 8-3 allowing five hits and striking out four over 5.0 innings, and was responsible for DSU's run. Stringfellow (S,2) allowed two hits in two innings of relief. Mines chased DSU starter Cambrie Hazel (7-4) after the second, but reliever Alex Melendez was effective allowing three hits in four scoreless innings.

Both Larson and Dickson led the Mines offense with two hits each.

GAME 2 - MINES 9, DIXIE STATE 2
A monster fourth inning helped Mines take the series with a 9-2 victory in the finale.

The Orediggers led 2-0 after three, but struck for seven runs as they batted around in the fourth. Kendall Murphy went 3-for-3 with a walk, while Katie Leiker, Clara Larson, and Kara Jones each drove in two runs.

Back-to-back RBI singles by Larson and Jones got Mines on the board in the third, but the game broke open in the fourth with seven runs off six hits. Megan Dickson led off with a double and scored on Murphy's infield single, and that sparked five straight at-bats producing a run as Leiker doubled, Larson singled, Jones drove in a run on a groundout, and Boston Ludlow doubled in a run. Claire Smith capped the rally with a pinch-hit single to the gap.

Dixie State clawed back two runs in the fifth in an error-extended inning to avoid the run rule, but Redding calmed the game and worked a quick sixth and seventh for the three-inning save.

The Mines bats supported two good pitching performances by Claire Stringfellow and Kylie Redding. Stringfellow earned the win to improve to 6-5, allowing two runs (neither earned) with two strikeouts in four innings; she departed in the fifth for Redding, who earned her first save with three innings of three-hit work.

A day after taking a no-hitter in the sixth, Carissa Burgess (11-3) was tagged for nine earned runs in 3.2 innings. Alex Melendez again pitched well in relief with 2.1 innings of one-hit scoreless ball.
