HAYWARD, Calif. – Kara Burton and
Maddie Geesen led the way for the Colorado School of Mines Track & Field teams on Friday as the Orediggers raced late into the night at the Mike Fanelli Track Classic hosted by San Francisco State at Chabot College.
Â
Burton's huge performance came in the women's 1,500-meter run as she took gold in a field of 145 competitors, many from NCAA Division I programs. Burton finished #1 with a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 4:28.50. Her finish also ranks #5 in Mines' history. It came just hours after teammate
Chloe Cook competed in the same event at the Stanford Invitational. The two Orediggers finished less than one second apart despite racing at different venues.
Â
Geesen came up big for Mines in the women's 5,000-meter run with her record-breaking time of 16:58.46. The California native finished #27 in a field of 157 with the fastest 5K time in Mines' history. Her performance marked an improvement of one minute and 27 seconds from her previous personal best. It also gives the redshirt sophomore a NCAA provisional qualifying time and she did it all on her 21st birthday.
Â
Seven other Orediggers took the track for Mines at the San Francisco State event.
Brook Eberle joined Burton in the 1,500 meters and finished #27 in 4:37.35.
Morgan Molesworth ran the 5,000 meters with Geesen and finished #64 in 17:24.47. Moleworth's time puts her #4 on Mines' all-time list. On the men's side,
Vincent Workman and
Miller Kettle raced in the 1,500 meters and finished in 3:57.25 and 4:02.79, respectively.
Josh Evans (14:34.81),
