LAST WEEKEND
Mines took two from New Mexico Highlands in a weather-shortened series, winning 3-2 and 16-2 on Friday. In the opener, Mines prevailed in a pitcher's duel as Sydney Marchando carried a shutout into the sixth before an NMHU home run gave them a 2-0 lead; Kara Jones' RBI single and a two-run Megan Dickson double in the bottom of the sixth gave Mines the lead. In game two, the Orediggers blasted 16 runs in the five-inning win as Hana Mawlawi drove in four and Clara Larson and Kylie Redding each had three RBI apiece. Claire Stringfellow struck out three allowing no earned runs in the win.

LARSON HEATS UP
Returning all-American Clara Larson had a tough start to the season, hitting .181 over her first seven games. Since then? The junior shortstop has been on fire, hitting .500 with nine RBI, four extra-base hits, and a six-game hit streak ongoing. Over the past six games she's raised her season average to .318 and slugging to .432 with a team-high 10 RBI.

ROOKIE SHOWS HER STUFF
Mines' breakout player of the season so far is freshman Kendall Murphy, who leads the team hitting .381 and slugging .500 through 12 games played. The rightfielder has a team-high five doubles and nine runs, and is second on the team with seven RBI.

MAWLAWI MAKES AN IMPACT
As a true freshman in 2018, Hana Mawlawi saw just one at-bat, making most of her 18 appearances as a pinch-runner. Fast forward a year, and Mawlawi has busted out in the starting second base role for Mines with a .323 average, five RBI, and a .419 slugging percentage in her first season as a starter. Mawlawi is coming off a career-best 3-for-3, 2-run, 4-RBI game in the finale against New Mexico Highlands last Friday.

IN THE CIRCLE
Sydney Marchando continues to lead the Orediggers in the circle this season, getting her record on the right side of .500 at 4-3 thanks to four straight wins. Her ERA is a staff-leading 2.40 and WHIP is 1.13 and she has struck out 42 (just under one K per inning) and has held opposing batters to .211. Claire Stringfellow is coming off her first win of the season to stand at 1-3 with a 3.16 ERA.

YOINK!
Kelsey Buechler tied the program single-game record earlier this season with three stolen bases against Black Hills State, joining Karrie Rein (2003) and Kari Gonzales (1999) in the Mines record book. Buechler stole third in the third inning, second in the fourth, and second in the fifth, scoring off the first two swipes. Mines stole a season-high six bases overall in that game.

MINES NOTABLES
To this point in the season, Mines has managed to play only 13 of a scheduled 20 games, with seven cancellations due to weather - three to rain, one to snow, and three to temperatures below the RMAC threshold of 25 degrees ... Katie Leiker is Mines' active hits leader at 152 … Leiker leads the RMAC having been hit by a pitch six times this year … Clara Larson is Mines' active leader in career RBI (118) and home runs (25) ... Larson is now seventh all-time at Mines in RBI (one behind former teammate Sonoma Toot) and is second all-time at Mines in homers, chasing Kaleigh Starr's record of 34 … At 142 hits, Larson could join Leiker among active Orediggers with 150 career hits … Megan Dickson hit Mines' first home run of 2019 in the final game against Black Hills State, a two-run shot that was the eighth of her career … Dickson has extra base hits in four of her last five games … Kara Jones ranks ninth all-time at Mines in doubles with 38.

LOOKING AHEAD
Mines will play a three-team pod at Chadron State next weekend, with two games against the hosts and two against Adams State.
