GOLDEN, Colo. – The Colorado School of Mines Baseball team cruised to a 10-4 victory over New Mexico Highlands on Friday afternoon in the Orediggers' 2019 RMAC opener at Jim Darden Field.
Mines put together a full team effort with four individuals collecting three hits each.
Phil VanZale was tops at the plate, going 3-for-5 with two runs and four RBI while hitting his third home run of the season.
Gabe Garvens also turned in a multi-RBI day, notching two on two hits.
Trevor Kehe,
Joe Popp and
John Howard joined VanZale with three hits as well. That same group combined to score four runs with a pair of RBI. Kehe added a triple to his resume, and
Derek Daly, Garvens and VanZale all hit doubles.
Tyler Blomster (3-1) earned the win on the mound with a three-run, four-hit performance while striking out 10 batters. The junior righty pitched 7.0 innings in his fourth start of the season while
Ian Durgin and
Sam Slusser appeared in relief with no save opportunity available. Kyle Bedsole (2-2) took the loss for New Mexico Highlands as Mines hit him up for six runs on 11 hits in 4.0 innings of work.
Overall, Mines (10-2) tallied 17 hits and extended its winning streak to nine games. The Orediggers hit .425 as a team while the pitching staff surrendered just three earned runs and struck out 13 Cowboys hitters. Friday marks the third straight year Mines has won it's RMAC opener.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Mines controlled the game from beginning to end as the Orediggers struck first and never looked back. VanZale drove in the first run of the game in the bottom of the opening frame as
Jace Selsor came in to score.
John Howard scorched a single off the glove of NMHU's pitcher to make it 2-0 after one inning of play.
Blomster and Mines' defense took the lead and settled in for five consecutive shutout innings. The shutout run was highlighted by Blomster striking out the side in order in the top of the second inning. The Orediggers proceeded to sit down nine consecutive Cowboys.
Meanwhile, on offense, Mines added two runs in the third inning thanks to VanZale's bomb to left field. Single runs in the fourth and fifth innings included Selsor stealing home on a delayed double steal. The Orediggers added a crooked number in the bottom of the sixth to offset New Mexico Highlands' two-run home run in the top half of the same frame.
Kehe capped Mines' scoring in the seventh thanks to a single from Popp. The visitors took advantage of an Oredigger miscue in the final frame and notched an unearned run. However, it was to no avail as Slusser closed out the victory with no further incident.
