McDermott Breaks Out in Finale Victory Over Trailblazers

GOLDEN, Colo. – True freshman Danny McDermott had a breakout game on Sunday as he helped the Orediggers to a 12-6 win and the series victory over Dixie State at Jim Darden Field.

McDermott went 2-for-4 with two home runs. He racked up four RBI and scored twice. Trevor Kehe kept it rolling at the plate, going 4-for-5 with three runs, one RBI and a double. Mikey Gangwish joined the party with a home run of his own on a four-RBI day for the senior. Jace Selsor and Joe Popp combined for six runs on three hits and two walks. Popp was also hit by a pitch twice. John Howard capped off the multi-hit performances with a 2-for-4 day at the plate, one RBI and a stolen base.

Drew Hill (4-2) sliced and diced on the mound to the tune of 12 strikeouts over six innings of work. Hill surrendered just two runs on five hits in his eighth start and fourth win of the season. Sam Slusser and Ian Durgin came out of the bullpen for Mines. Dixie State's Tyler Rosas (1-2) made his second start of the year and took the loss, departing the game after two innings of four-run, five-hit baseball.

The series victory moves Mines (22-9, 13-7 RMAC) into a tie for third in the RMAC standings with Dixie State and UCCS. The Orediggers started the weekend ranked sixth in the league. Sunday's finale saw Mines hit .378 as a team while the pitching staff tallied 15 strikeouts. Dixie State (23-11, 13-7 RMAC) entered the series ranked #3 in the nation in team batting average, but only hit .297 as a squad on Sunday with three hits for extra bases. Losses around the conference have the Orediggers just three games out of first place.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Sunny skies and temperatures approaching 70 degrees boded well for the Orediggers as the home team struck first once again. Hill shut out Dixie State in its first chance at the plate. Then, Selsor and Popp opened up the bottom half with back-to-back hits. Popp's was a bunt single to third base. Kehe walked to load the bases and Gabe Garvens, McDermott and John Howard drove the runs in for a 3-0 lead.

Hill stayed hot on the mound, recording the first six outs of the game by way of strikeout. Mines supported him on offense by adding single runs in the second inning and third inning. The run in the second came off the bat of Kehe who hit a RBI-double, scoring Selsor. McDermott provided the lone run in the third with his solo shot over the scoreboard in right-center field.

Dixie State did break up the shutout in the top of the third inning with one run, but not before Mines' defense flashed the leather. A lead-off bunt single turned into an unassisted, line-drive double play for Selsor. The Trailblazers did use two more hits and a walk to get their run before Hill struck out the last batter of the inning, his seventh of the game.

Three Oredigger runs in the fourth frame came courtesy of Gangwish's three-run dinger to left-center field. Back-to-back scoreless innings led to one more run for DSU. However, Mines virtually sealed the victory by scoring four more runs in the seventh. The surge was highlighted by McDermott's second bomb of the game – this one to straightaway center field. The 12-3 advantage proved fortuitous as Dixie State staged a three-run rally in the eighth inning. Durgin snuffed the visitor's hopes of a comeback by recording the last four outs of the game including one strikeout.
