GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - Colorado School of Mines saw its season come to an end at the hands of MSU Denver as the Roadrunners won 10-4 in an elimination game at the RMAC Tournament at Colorado Mesa.
Clara Larson set the Mines career home runs record in the loss, producing all four of the Orediggers' runs with a three-run blast in the sixth and an RBI double in the seventh. Julia Heitz carried a no-hitter into the sixth for the Roadrunners, who advance to face Dixie State in an elimination game Saturday morning for the right to play Colorado Mesa for the championship.
MSU Denver built a 5-0 lead with runs in the second, third, and fifth. Ashlee Kim got things going with an RBI double in the second, and Laney Sheppard produced the next two runs with a third-inning double and fifth-inning single before Darby McGhee's squeeze bunt and an error in the fifth tacked on two more.
Larson's home run came in the sixth after
Kendall Murphy walked and
Katie Leiker singled to break up Heitz's no-hitter; Larson launched a no-doubter to left center to set the record and put Mines in business down 5-3.
The Roadrunners, however, shut the door in their half of the seventh with a five-run outburst on six hits. Abby Anderson's bases-loaded single got the rally going before Ari Valdez drove in two runs with a single and Ashlee Kim did the same on the next at-bat to lead 10-3. Mines didn't go quietly as Larson doubled in
Dani Valerio in the bottom of the seventh, but the deficit was too much to make up as Heitz closed out the game.
Heitz (10-6) was terrific for MSU Denver in the early going, using her defense to hold Mines hitless through five innings as she tossed a complete game.
Claire Stringfellow (12-9) went into the seventh for Mines, throwing 126 pitches and allowing eight runs with five strikeouts;
Sydney Marchando and
Maddie Rogers each got an out in the seventh.
