GOLDEN, Colo. – Redshirt senior
Ben Overholt gave the Colorado School of Mines Men's Soccer team the 2-1 victory over South Dakota Mines Friday night with his game-winning goal at Stermole Stadium.
Overholt's goal was assisted by
Ford Edwards. The duo ended up combining for five shots with two shots on goal. Mines' initial tally was off the head of
Jason Zobott with
Talon Stanley on the assist. Zobott led all players in the match with five shots while putting two on frame.
Adam Kindorf also notched three attempts for the Orediggers, putting two of those on target.
Drew Johnson earned the win in net, playing all 90 minutes and surrendering just one goal.
As a team, Mines (3-2-0, 1-0-0 RMAC) dominated the game with 21 shots compared to just three attempts by South Dakota Mines (1-3-0, 0-1-0 RMAC). The Orediggers also racked up five corner kicks while SDSMT only had one. To his credit, the Hardrockers' goalkeeper made seven saves in the match while Mines had zero, but nine Oredigger shots on goal proved too much. The victory continues Mines' streak of avoiding back-to-back losses, dating back to 2017.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Friday evening saw a slow start to the match as both teams combined for only four shot attempts in the first 29 minutes of action. However, in the 29th minute, SDSMT committed a foul which set up a free kick. Stanley stepped up to the ball and sailed it into the penalty area where it found the head of Zobott who redirected into the net for a 1-0, Oredigger lead.
South Dakota Mines took less than 60 seconds to respond and they took the opportunity right out of the Orediggers' playbook. The home team committed a foul setting up a Hardrockers' free kick which was also redirected into the net, tying the score 1-1. That would be the tally going into halftime even though Colorado School of Mines ripped off four more shots in the last 15 minutes of the opening period.
The second 45 minutes of action featured 13 shots with five shots on goal and three corner kicks by the Orediggers. Only one of those attempts found the back of the net, but one would be enough. In the 57th minute, Edwards would play a pass to Overholt who did not hesitate to bury it in the net and give the home team a 2-1 lead. The Orediggers would hold that lead for more than half an hour to claim the victory.
