#16 Mines Edged by St. Mary’s

SAN ANTONIO – The #16-ranked Colorado School of Mines Men's Soccer team dropped its first match of 2019 on Sunday in a 3-1 decision against St. Mary's at Sigma Beta Chi Field.

Lucas King accounted for the Orediggers lone goal in efficient fashion, taking just one shot in the whole game and putting it in the back of the net. Greyson Adams helped out on the assist. Tristan Semelsberger, Ryan Wilson and Baptiste Debuire also got in on the action with shot attempts of their own. Semelsberger led the way with three shots while putting one on goal. In goal, Drew Johnson (1-1) wore the loss despite making three saves.

Overall, Mines (1-1) finished contest with seven shots and dominated corner kicks by a margin of 6-2. However, St. Mary's (2-0) doubled up its guest in shot attempts with 12, putting six on goal and needing just one save for the victory. It was Ollie Wright of the Rattlers who accounted for the eventual game-winning goal, his second tally of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
St. Mary's was the first to strike, just three minutes into the match. It came on a cross from Liam Morrison which found the foot of Jesus Valenzuela after a quickly progressing buildup from midfield. The Rattlers would make it 2-0 in the 26th minute after Mines mishandled a ball in its defensive zone.

However, the Orediggers refused to be shutout. With less than three minutes remaining in the first period, St. Mary's Wright committed a foul that setup a free kick on Mines' attacking half. Adams stepped to the ball and served it into the 18-yard box where a disorganized defensive line left King open to head the ball into the goal. That tally sent the match into halftime with the Orediggers trailing 2-1.

The second proved to be a defensive stalemate for nearly the entire 45 minutes. St. Mary's managed six shots but put only one on goal. Unfortunately, Mines worked up just two shots with none on frame. Then, in the 84th minute, the home team notched its third goal of the game to seal the win.
