GOLDEN, Colo. - Freshmen
Jordan Barnhart and
Emi Higgins provided the goals as #15 Colorado School of Mines blew past San Francisco State in a 2-0 win on Sunday.
The Orediggers (2-0-0) outshot the Gators (0-1-1) by a healthy 24-7 margin, and received a shutout courtesy of tough defense and a superb showing by
Shannon Mooney, who made five saves including several challenging stops.
Barnhart got the Orediggers on the board quickly with a header off a corner in the sixth minute. With the ball bouncing between heads in the box,
Nicole LaTourette set up Barnhart for a thump at the far post, netting the rookie centerback her first career goal. Mines had several other chances, including a hit crossbar for LaTourette, as they peppered SFSU with 10 first-half shots, but it was Mooney who made fireworks on the defensive end. SFSU's best chance of the game came a half-hour in when Katelyn Patterson had a one-on-one chance go off the left post, and Mooney then made a terrific reaction save to the rebound opportunity by Carly Ortega to preserve a 1-0 lead.
Mines got things going in the second half with Higgins' 52nd-minute goal to double the lead. Higgins, who scored the opening goal Friday night against Chico State, was sprung on the break by
Chaney Brugman's pass from her own half and beat the goalkeeper at the far post. The Orediggers didn't stop there as they had two close-in free kick opportunities just miss, and
Karolina Sidebaeck had a breakaway chance denied by Sommer Harrington as part of 14 second-half opportunities for the home side.
