Softball Splits At UCCS To Win Series

Colorado School of Mines scored 13 unanswered runs to beat UCCS, 13-4, in five innings to start Saturday.

The Orediggers pounded out 11 hits and had three four-run innings as six different players drove in runs. Clara Larson and Stefanie Brunello homered; Larson had four RBI to lead all players and Sam Wade drove in three.

Mines' bats supported Sydney Marchando's (4-2) second win of the weekend as she struck out four and allowed four runs (two earned). Marchando also helped herself at the plate with a 2-for-3, three-run, two-RBI game.

UCCS got off to a fast start manufacturing a four-run top of the first, but Mines chipped away with Renata Boyd's bases-loaded single in the bottom half before blowing it open in the second. Hana Mawlawi's sac fly started the comeback, with Larson's three-run home run putting Mines ahead 5-4 later in the inning.

Brunello's solo home run in the third made it 6-4, but Wade smacked a bases-clearing double to break it open at 9-4. Four more runs went on the board in the fourth as Marchando drove in two runs with a single then scored on Mawlawi's single, and Larson reached on an error to plate Mawlawi for the 13th run.

UCCS combined three pitchers with Braelyne Crenshaw (4-4) taking the loss allowing eight runs. The Mountain Lions committed four errors in the game.
 

GAME 2 - UCCS 11, MINES 6
UCCS dashed Mines' hopes of a sweep a they produced 11 runs off 14 hits to win the getaway game 11-6.

The Mountain Lions hit three home runs in the game led by Peyton Reisman, who drove in three runs on two roundtrips. Brianna Santos also had three RBI. Mines was led by Clara Larson, who had two RBI on two hits, and Sam Wade, who also drove in two. Despite the loss, Mines (6-7, 3-1 RMAC) won the series thanks to their split on Saturday after going 2-0 on Friday.

The two teams traded runs in the first as UCCS started with a sacrifice fly before Larson drove in Sydney Marchando to tie it; UCCS took the lead in the fourth when Santos hit a bases-loaded triple, and they added to the advantage on Alex Cook's solo homer in the third and a Taylor White base hit to score Cook in the fifth.

Mines fought back with Wade's RBI single to plate Marchando in the fifth, but Reisman hit her first homer in the sixth to make it 7-2; Mines answered with three runs in the bottom of the sixth as Stefanie Brunello doubled in Kelsey Buechler, Larson singled home Brunello, and Wade again brought Marchando across as she reached on an error.

UCCS shut the door in their final at-bat as Reisman smashed a two-run homer and Cook doubled in a run; Marchando doubled in the bottom of the seventh to score Buechler but Mines couldn't make up the deficit.

Claire Stringfellow (1-4) was charged with the loss, allowing six runs and striking out three through 4.1 innings. Lauren Decker threw 2.1 innings of relief allowing eight runs (five earned) and Sadriena Rodriguez got the final out in the seventh with her first collegiate strikeout. UCCS combined three pitchers with Cami Duffey (1-4) getting the win 5.1 innings, allowing eight runs (four earned).
