2020 Blaster Awards Nominees Announced

The 2020 Blaster Awards will stream live on the RMAC Network on Thursday, May 14 at 6 p.m. MT! Check out the nominees in each category below.

The Blaster Awards were established in 2016 to honor the best in Mines athletics. Through nominations and votes from Mines' head coaches, the event started with 12 categories and now features 15 awards given out at a red-carpet ceremony attended by all of Mines' varsity teams.

Female Rookie of the Year

Awarded to an outstanding female athlete who is in their first year of eligibility (either true freshman or redshirt freshman). Transfers are not eligible unless they are a redshirt freshman.

Honorable Mention All-RMAC.
RMAC Defensive Player of the Week.
Started 20 times at center back as a true freshman, helping Mines allow just 0.48 goals and 7.3 shots per game.
Scored 3 goals and co-lead the team with 5 assists.
Started all 21 games, primarily in the outfield, as a true freshman.
Hit .301 with 11 runs scored, three doubles, and a team-leading two triples in the shortened season.
Struck out just once in 73 at-bats.
Led Mines with nine stolen bases in nine attempts.
2020 RMAC Freshman of the Year.
First-Team All-RMAC and USTFCCCA All-Region in the pole vault.
NCAA qualifier for the DII National Championships, seeded #11 in the PV.
Shattered the program record in the pole vault in her first collegiate competition and broke her own record two more times up to 4.01m (13-1.75).
First-Team All-RMAC in the 200-fly.
RMAC silver medalist in the 200-fly as a true freshman; also finished 6th in the 400-IM.

2020 RMAC Champion in the indoor high jump.
Crowned 2020 RMAC Freshman of the Year and USTFCCCA All-Region.
Qualified for the NCAA Division II National Championships in the high jump seeded #10 in the nation.
Tied the program record in the high jump by clearing 2.11m (6-11.0).
Utility player for Mines with starts on the mound and in the field while coming out of the bullpen.
Posted a 1-1 record in three starts and seven appearances on the mound with 21 strikeouts and a 4.55 ERA.
Hit .429 at the plate with one run and three RBI on two doubles while slugging .714 with no errors in the field.
Threw 6.0 shutout innings of two-hit baseball at NMHU and also struck out 11 batters in 6.0 innings at Fort Hays State.
Consistent part of Mines' lineup as a true freshman.
Averaged 75.87 in 15 rounds over 5 tournaments.
Top finish was T25 at the Otter Invitational.

Female Academic Athlete of the Year

Awarded to the most outstanding female scholar-athlete, with a combination of athletic and academic achievement taken into consideration.

USTFCCCA Cross Country All-American, finishing #19 in the nation.
Two-time USTFCCCA All-Academic and RMAC First-Team All-Academic.
2020 NCAA qualifier and RMAC Champion in the 3,000-meter run as a redshirt freshman.
Four-time USTFCCCA All-Region between cross country and track & field.
Helped Mines Cross Country finish #3 in the nation for the first podium finish in program history.
D2CCA Second-Team All-Region and First-Team All-RMAC.
United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-America Third Team and RMAC First-Team All-Academic.
Two-time CoSIDA Academic All-District (2018, 2019).
Led Mines with 10 goals and five assists, ending her career ranked in the Orediggers' all-time top five in goals (27, 4th) and points (65, 4th).

In 2019 he was limited to nine games due to injury but made 18 tackles, 1.0 TFL, 2 INT (with one pick-six), 6 PBU, and a blocked kick as the starter at free safety.

Led Mines to the Sweet 16 and a program record 13 shutouts at center back while ranking #3 on the team in scoring.
Run to the Sweet 16 included a win over #1-ranked Azusa Pacific on their home field.

Comeback Player of the Year

Awarded to an athlete, male or female, who overcame injury, illness, or other adversity, to perform at a high level this season

Missed 2018 with a torn ACL.
Returned as a senior to earn Honorable Mention All-RMAC.
Played every game at nose tackle to lead a defensive front that ranked #6 in NCAA D-II in rushing defense and #13 in total defense
Suffered high ankle sprain at the 2018 NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships, but raced to All-America status.
Missed the remainder of what would have been his senior season in 2018-19 due to that injury at nationals.
Returned for indoor track & field in 2019-20 and qualified for the NCAA Championships in three different events.
Ranked #18 in the nation in the 3,000-meter run, #15 in the 5,000-meter run, and #5 as part of the distance-medley relay.
Earned the starting 197-pound role and went 18-9 for RMAC Champions.
Competed through knee and shoulder injuries throughout the 2019-20 season.
Qualified for the 2020 NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships at 197 lbs after wrestling back at regionals.
Injured during the 2018-19 season and kept out of competition and training.
Returned to practice and competition in 2019-20 with a full course load and part time job in cyber security while showing up daily to practice.
Posted multiple best times and qualified for the NCAA Championships on the 800-freestyle relay team, projected to finish inside the top-16.
According to Coach McDaniel, "She was INTEGRAL to EVERY relay. If we could clone her and put her on every freestyle relay at every meet, we would have because she was very dependable and consistently swimming fast as the season progressed. She has recently been elected co-captain of the women’s swim team next year and not only leads our team in the pool but also with her leadership skills and leading by example, living a balanced life while excelling in all areas"
Started the 2019 season with laser surgery on both eyes to address degradation of the cornea.
Appeared just two times late in the 2019 season, missing nearly all 55 games.
Returned in 2020 by switching from a LHP/OF to the team's starting first-baseman.
Finished the shortened season hitting .313 with 11 runs and 14 RBI on two doubles and four home runs. All the first hits of his career.
According to Coach Bales, "Toby fought through eye issues and eye surgery recovery. Then, he moved from LHP/OF to 1B replacing one of the most decorated players in program history."

SAAC Community Impact Award

The SAAC Community Impact award is voted upon by the membership of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee to recognize the outstanding community service by either one student-athlete, a group, or a team.

The duo of Grant Buss and Jacob Lutey served as the football representatives on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee for the 2019-20 school year. In addition to helping Mines win the 2019 RMAC Championship and maintaining their grades, Buss and Lutey volunteered their time for multiple community service events. Some of the causes where Buss and Lutey gave their time included Special Olympics events on campus, the canned food drive, the Civic Center Gala and the Golden Farmers Market.
Since joining SAAC in January of 2018, Delaney has volunteered with over 10 organizations over the last three years and was voted Community Outreach Chair in February 2019. Delaney has given her time to everything from the Golden Farmers Market to the Mines Golf Outing to reading programs with local elementary schools. However, her true passion clearly became Special Olympics. Since 2018, Delaney has coordinated events with teams, provided volunteers and then setup and ran the events for Special Olympics Basketball, Soccer, Volleyball, Swimming and Powerlifting - many of them multiple times. As Outreach Chair, she oversaw a group of seven peers and clearly managed them effectively and efficiently during her time in that role.
Nicole LaTourette served as one of the women's soccer representatives on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee for the 2019-20 school year. She not only maintained a full class load but started for the Orediggers while maintaining heavy involvement in all SAAC events throughout the year. Some of the causes SAAC helped serve during LaTourette's tenure included the canned food drive, the Civic Center Gala, reading programs at local elementary schools and many more.
Sydney has organized and run countless volunteer opportunities for all of SAAC and the Mines community. Her oversight and participation includes, but is not limited too, the Golden Chili Cookoff, the SAAC Make-a-Wish Campaign, the Clothing drive and the FCA Holiday Food Drive. Sydney also gives a large amount of her time to the Mines Peer Mentor Program and the Trick or Treat so Golden can Eat food drive. According to one of her peers, "She was the entire driving force for the clothing drive and primary designer of the "We Bust Ours" shirts that fund the Make-a-Wish Campaign." Most recently, Sydney was voted President of SAAC for the 2020-21 school year.
"In addition to being an international modern pentathlon athlete representing the USA, he also volunteers FOR pentathlon and he spends a lot of time volunteering with Humanitarian Engineering. He designed a website for them, helped with a research project for miners in Colombia and continues to do research there. "
"She spent countless hours helping to set up Special Olympics with swimming, helped a lot with our Team Impact Player, Bella, and always shared small local ways to help out throughout the year. "
The duo of Toby and Chris not only gave their own time, but coordinated the participation of the baseball team in numerous community service events. Some of these service projects include the Golden Chili Cookoff, the SAAC Make-a-Wish Campgain, the Clothing drive and the FCA Holiday Food Drive. Additionally, Toby and Chris give their time to Team Impact, making Gavan a part of the Orediggers' baseball team.
Logan served as the wrestling team's representative on SAAC in 2019-20 and also worked diligently as a team leader. He coordinated various team engagement activities throughout the season and volunteered much of his own time as well.

Awarded to a female senior who has demonstrated unparalleled dedication to physical preparation. Candidates will have been at the forefront of their team’s training in both personal improvement and leadership, exemplifying what it means to work behind the scenes. Candidates must have appeared in at least 50% of their team's competitions. This award is voted on by the strength & conditioning staff.

Awarded to a male senior who has demonstrated unparalleled dedication to physical preparation. Candidates will have been at the forefront of their team’s training in both personal improvement and leadership, exemplifying what it means to work behind the scenes. Candidates must have appeared in at least 50% of their team's competitions. This award is voted on by the strength & conditioning staff.

Female Oredigger Excellence Award

Awarded to a female senior who has completed their eligibility and has distinguished themselves in an outstanding manner in achievement, leadership, and school spirit over the course of their Mines careers.

Five-year team member of the women's track & field team as a throwing specialist.
Two-time RMAC Champion in the shot put and 10-time All-RMAC honoree.
Five-time USTFCCCA All-Region with two NCAA Championships appearances, finishing as high as #14 in the nation.
Holds the program record for indoor shot put, ranks #2 all-time in the outdoor shot put.
Also sits #2 in program history in the weight throw and #3 in the hammer.
Five-year team member and seven-time RMAC champion with women's soccer.
Earned Honorable Mention All-RMAC as a senior and one of only two players on the team start all 23 games despite her own injuries.
Starting outside back for NCAA's #7-rated defense (0.48 goals per game).
Four-time RMAC All-Academic.
According to Coach Fickes, "Mickey was a walk-on who went from zero time to regular starter over five years, tough competitor, played in a load of pain all of 2019, great student, great kid, and good role model."

According to Coach McDaniel, "Olivia is the model for this award. She has been instrumental to the success of the distance swimming program at Mines and has put in very hard work and a lot of miles to earn valuable points for her team. She is a natural and humble leader. This year was difficult without a head coach at the beginning of the year and she stepped up to make sure the team was involved with community service events. Olivia has been a member of SAAC and always made sure the swim team was involved in SAAC events. She is also a member of the Blue Key honor society and has shared Mines history with the team. She truly exemplifies “Oredigger Excellence."
Three-time AVCA All-American and four-year member of the volleyball team.
Named AVCA South Central Region Player of the Year in 2019 and boasts three First-Team All-RMAC accolades.
Part of four total RMAC Championships including two tournament titles and two regular-season crowns.
Led Mines to four straight NCAA Tournaments and the Sweet 16 in 2019.
Listed 13 times in the program record book thanks to 1,211 kills and 356 blocks in her career.

Male Oredigger Excellence Award

Awarded to a male senior who has completed their eligibility and has distinguished themselves in an outstanding manner in achievement, leadership, and school spirit over the course of their Mines careers.

Seven-time All-American between cross country and track & field.
Helped Mines win its first-ever National Championship in 2015, finishing #33 in the nation at cross country nationals as a redshirt freshman.
2018 NCAA South Central Regional Individual Champion.
2017 individual champion at RMAC Cross Country.
Part of six RMAC team titles in cross country and track & field and a seven-time All-RMAC honoree.
2018 CoSIDA Academic All-American and 2017 RMAC Academic Cross Country Runner of the Year.
Four-year baseball team member that helped Mines reach its first two NCAA Tournaments in program history.
Ranks 3rd in Mines history in all-time home runs, 8th in all-time RBI and walks and 10th in all-time doubles.
Tied the program record for single-game home runs and total bases by hitting three home runs against Adams State on March 29, 2019.
Three-time RMAC First-Team All-Academic and CoSIDA Academic All-District in 2018.
Named RMAC All-Tournament in 2018 and RMAC Hitter of the Week in 2019.
Has appeared in 163 games while batting .301 with 111 runs and 135 RBI including 39 doubles, two triples and 36 home runs in his career.

Was a two-year starter before missing his redshirt senior season due to injury while remaining in grad school.
Served as SAAC President, Peer Mentor, attended numerous Mines Athletic events across all sports and provided additional leadership on various committees on campus.
Member of 5 NCAA Tournament teams.
Provided leadership as only senior on this year's team which advanced to the RMAC Tournament final and NCAA Tournament.
High academic student, earning B.S. in 2019 and M.S. in 2020.

Despite missing half of senior year due to injury, graduated as Mines' all-time leader in rushing yards (4,074), touchdowns (52), and yards per carry (6.3).
Only player in Mines history to rush for 1,500+ yards in a season twice and broke single-season rushing record that had stood since 1939.
Four-year Mines swim team member while training as a member of the Team USA modern pentathlon team.
Is an Olympic hopeful and currently the 6th-ranked modern pentathlete in the United States.
According to Coach McDaniel, "Seamus has a unique story as he competes for the USA in modern pentathlon and thus began training with the swim team to improve the swimming aspect. He ended up loving the team and became a strong leader by his senior year. He creates and fosters unity between the women’s and men’s swim teams. He always helps to promote the school by offering his help with recruiting and being involved with community service events and team events. Seamus is an incredible olympic-level athlete and a trustworthy and steadfast leader. He truly exemplifies “Oredigger Excellence."
2019 CoSIDA Academic All-American of the Year for all of NCAA DII Men's Soccer.
Two-Time All-American and the 2019 RMAC Player of the Year, RMAC Defensive Player of the Year and RMAC Academic Player of the Year.
Started every single game of his career at center back as Mines won three straight RMAC titles for the first time in program history.
Led the Orediggers to the NCAA Sweet 16 in two of his four seasons including a 2019 victory over #1-ranked Azusa Pacific on their home field.
Part of 51 shutouts and three NCAA Tournament appearances as the Orediggers' center back.
According to Coach Mulholland, "Jason is a clear cut team leader, team captain and National Academic Player of the Year. He's also a model student and had strong leadership qualities that propelled the team this year to great wins while fostering team camaraderie and high character values."

Female Athlete of the Year

Awarded to the most outstanding female athlete of the year

Highest individual nationals finish in program history, taking 7th in the nation.
Helped Mines' women take 3rd in the nation for the first podium finish in program history.
USTFCCCA All-America, All-Region and First-Team All-RMAC while earning RMAC Academic Runner of the Year.
Top American runner at the RMAC and South Central Regional Championships and 2nd-ranked American runner at nationals.
Led team hitting .392 and slugging .676 in 20 starts with 24 RBI, 4 HR, 5 doubles, and 2 triples (all team bests).
Set the Mines career RBI (182), home run (39), and slugging (.718) records.
NCAA active leader in total bases (414) and ranks top-5 in RBI and doubles.

Has been a three-time All-RMAC selection before this season (no all-RMAC awards in 2020).

Racked up 15 runs and 15 RBI in just 18 games in 2020.
Slugged .615 thanks to three doubles, one triple and three home runs.
Nearly hit for the cycle at Fort Hays State, going 4-5 with four runs and five RBI thanks to two home runs and one double.
