GOLDEN, Colo. – Colorado School of Mines student-athletes earned 94 degrees during the university's spring Commencement ceremonies on Friday, May 8.
Current Orediggers and those who have exhausted their eligibility were honored in two different virtual ceremonies streamed live online. In total, 71 student-athletes earned bachelor's degrees and 23 others were conferred with master's degrees. Thanks to 29 degree recipients in December, 123 Oredigger student-athletes earned a silver diploma in the 2019-20 school year.
The class of 2020 proved incredibly accomplished in competition and in the classroom with 20 All-Americans and eight Academic All-Americans among them. Of the 94 degree recipients, 63 have been either on a RMAC championship team or won an individual conference title, 62 have been to the NCAA Championships on a team or individually, and 10 have been national champions.
Mines student-athletes in the class of 2020 earned numerous departmental honors as well. Track & field's
Cierra DellaRova was the Metallurgical and Materials Engineering department's outstanding senior, and football's
Scott Marshall earned the same honor for Economics & Business. Baseball's
Walter Pennington was one of two seniors to win the William D. Waltman Award, presented to a graduate who has shown the utmost integrity, scholarship and citizenship in their collegiate career.
The Orediggers' 2020 President's Senior Scholar-Athletes were volleyball's
Abby Tiesman and soccer's
Jason Zobott. The award is given to one male and one female graduating student-athlete who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and the leadership qualities of an exemplary student-athlete. Both Tiesman and Zobott hold a plethora of academic and athletic honors in their careers including Zobott's 2019 CoSIDA Academic All-American of the Year and Tiesman's 2019 AVCA South Central Regional Player of the Year.
Several programs had multiple student-athletes earn advanced degrees led by six from men's and women's track & field and cross country including
Ali Artzberger,
Courtney Clark,
Grant Colligan,
Miller Kettle,
Connor McLean, and
Ben Schneiderman. Those six individuals boast a combined 16 All-America awards between cross country, indoor track & field and outdoor track & field. Other programs with multiple master's recipients included swimming's three with the All-American swimming twins
April Wood and
Mia Wood along with
Tyler Buck; football with four (
Brandon Farmer,
Riley Miller,
Zach Peterson,
Brockton Sterling), three from baseball (
Jace Selsor,
Sam Slusser,
Ben Stinson), two each from men's basketball (
Duke Douglas,
Luke Golter) and men's soccer (
Drew Johnson,
Ben Overholt). Softball's
Kara Jones, women's basketball's
Anna Kollmorgen, and wrestling's
Jake Feldman also completed advanced degrees.
Additionally, over one-third of the student-athletes in the Mines class of 2020 graduated with honors based on their grade-point average. Twelve Oredigger student-athletes graduated
cum laude, 14 more graduated
magna cum laude and six obtained the highest level of honors,
summa cum laude, for a total of 32 in the graduating class.
While the COVID-19 pandemic forced Commencement into a virtual format, the tradition of student-athletes leading the singing of "The Mining Engineer" fight song continued thanks to the efforts of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and their president Jacob Feldman (wrestling). A video of their performance closed both ceremonies.
