GOLDEN, Colo. -
Emi Higgins' early goal held up as Colorado School of Mines picked up a conference win over Colorado Christian, 1-0, Thursday night.
The Orediggers (8-2-3, 5-1-1 RMAC) controlled the match from start to finish, outshooting the Cougars (4-5-3, 3-3-1 RMAC) by a 25-7 margin and generating 11 corners.
Higgins converted an unlikely scoring opportunity in the eighth minute to put the hosts ahead.
Laura Butler made a run to the end line on the left side of goal and saved the ball from going out, crossing to the near post for a camping Higgins to stuff in. The Orediggers had multiple other first-half scoring chances, including
Jordan Barnhart's shot off a corner that was cleared off the line in the 27th minute,
Eliot Edwards hitting the bar in the 33rd, and
Elise Putnam just missing a breakaway chance two minutes later.
The Orediggers' best shot of the second half was a side volley from
Amena Nelson off
Karolina Sidebaeck's cross in the 64th minute that whistled right of the post. Mines took 14 shots and seven corners in the second half but were unable to double the lead.
