Sunday's victory extended the win streak for Mines (11-3-0, 6-0-0 RMAC) to seven consecutive victories. Regis (7-5-1, 3-3-0 RMAC) dropped its second straight decision and has lost three of its last four matches. The Orediggers outshot the Rangers by 22-13 margin which included a 9-5 discrepancy in shots on goal. Regis goalkeeper Tim Dolan recorded six saves compared to three for Mines, but the home team earned eight corner kicks while RU had just one. In total, 29 fouls were whistled and four yellow cards were issued.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Sunday dawned with picturesque conditions for soccer and the teams on the field delivered a thriller. Regis struck first in the 24th minute on an unassisted goal from Vilhjamur Kaldal, and the 1-0 Ranger advantage stood all the way to halftime. In fact, RU carried the lead all the way into the 69th minute. It was then that Mines found the equalizer as Ocampo cleaned up a scrum in front of the box with help from Seery and Sokolowski.
After the Orediggers tied the match at 1-1, the proverbial flood gates opened and a scoring flurry commenced. Ten minutes after the equalizer, Adams took a long free keep from deep in Mines' defensive zone. The ball carried all the way into the Ranger penalty area and Sprauer flicked it with his head into the net for a 2-1 Oredigger lead. However, the advantage didn't even last 90 seconds. Kaldal struck again for Regis in the 82nd minute to make it 2-2.
As the clock hit 00:00, it was clear that 90 minutes was insufficient and neither was 100 minutes. Finally, 63 seconds into the second overtime period, Mines found the game winner. As Rodriguez attempted to win the match himself in the 101st minute, he was held in the box and the whistle blew to signal a penalty kick. Semelsberger stepped to the line and flawlessly converted to clinch the victory.
